Born in Sacramento, California, Avenatti originally earned his B.A. degree from the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in Political Science, in 1996, later earning his J.D. from George Washington University Law School, in Washington, D.C., ultimately graduating first in his class. To honor him, the school issued the Michael J. Avenatti Award for Excellence in Pre-Trial and Trial Advocacy, an annual award, starting in 2003.


2000-2009

Initially, after law school, Avenatti worked at O’Melveny & Myers in Los Angeles, California, representing many figures in the entertainment industry; he later joined Greene Broillet & Wheeler, a Los Angeles boutique litigation firm. By 2007, he formed his own law firm, Eagan Avenatti, LLP, with offices throughout California, including Newport Beach, Los Angeles and San Francisco. During this time, he also started gaining fame as a legal commenter for various media programs, such as 60 Minutes.


2010-Present

In 2010, Avenatti found work outside of the legal profession as a race car driver, competing in professional races like FIA World Endurance Championship, Porsche Supercup and United SportsCar Championship races. In 2018, Avenatti once again gained prominence for his work as a lawyer, Avenatti filed a lawsuit on behalf of adult film actress Stormy Daniels, concerning a “hush agreement” with United States President Donald Trump.
