Born in Sacramento, California, Avenatti originally earned his B.A. degree from the University of Pennsylvania, majoring in Political Science, in 1996, later earning his J.D. from George Washington University Law School, in Washington, D.C., ultimately graduating first in his class. To honor him, the school issued the Michael J. Avenatti Award for Excellence in Pre-Trial and Trial Advocacy, an annual award, starting in 2003.
Initially, after law school, Avenatti worked at O’Melveny & Myers in Los Angeles, California, representing many figures in the entertainment industry; he later joined Greene Broillet & Wheeler, a Los Angeles boutique litigation firm.
