Jaelynn Willey, a young, teenage girl who became brain dead after being shot during the Great Mills High School shooting in Maryland, having been hit by Austin Rollins using a semi-automatic handgun, will now be taken off life support, as confirmed by her family this past Thursday night.

Since the shooting, Willey has been in the intensive care unit at UM Prince George’s Hospital Center; however, her family confirmed that she will now be taken off of life support. According to NBC Washinton, Jaelynn’s mother, Melissa Willey, issued the following statements during a news conference:

“My daughter was hurt by a boy who shot her in the head…and took everything from our lives.”

“She will not make it…She’s brain-dead and has nothing – no life left in her.”

Jaelynn Willey was a student at Great Mills High School in Maryland, before the first-period bell rang, by a shooter later identified as Austin Wyatt Rollins, who later lost his life in a standoff with the school resource officer. Another victim, Desmond Barnes, was shot in the leg but has since been released from the hospital. While early investigators believed that Jaelynn had a previous relationship with Rollins, at this time, the nature of any relationship is unclear.

In a statement on a Youcaring Fundraiser page, Jaelynn’s family issued the following description of her:

“Jaelynn is an amazing young lady whose peaceful presence and love of her fellow students and family is known throughout her Maryland-based school.”

“It is hard for us not to see her shining, smiling face right now, and to see her light up the room with her presence.”

“Please keep Jaelynn and our family in your prayers.”
