A group of students at the University of Texas at San Antonio are planning to publish a magazine called “No Whites Allowed” (NWA). This magazine is said to be written by “QPOC for QPOC” which means it is written by and for “Queer Persons of Color.”
The title “No Whites Allowed” explicitly excludes “white people,” but the group may also exclude non-queer persons of color from publication according to the motto of “QPOC for QPOC” and the magazine being exclusively written by “black and brown lgbtqa creatives.” That is, unless the “A” in “LGBTQA” stands for non-queer brown and black “allies” instead of “asexual,” which then would mean that the only people excluded are white people as the title would suggest.
The official reveal date of the magazine “No Whites Allowed” is Thursday, March 1, 2018. According to a Facebook event with the title “Zine Release,” the magazine will be revealed to the public at La Botanica, “Texas’ first vegan restaurant with a full bar and performance and event venue.”
“Thursday at La Botanica from 8-11pm there will be the NWA Zine release party! This zine specifically features and promotes black and brown lgbtqa creatives,” according to the event’s description. “We hope to showcase our talent and create an open space for our voices to be heard.”
The event description also states that “for a very long time, black and brown people, especially those who are queer, have been told that they don’t have a space. That they don’t have a voice or a say. With this we would like to create a space.”
Student Kayla Ramey explained the main goal and purpose of the event in a Facebook comment.
“I keep having to make this post but I’ll try it one last time so everyone clearly understands. The name of the zine is No Whites Allowed. It’s a zine for QPOC and by QPOC,” Ramey wrote. She added that while “white people are welcome to come to the event,” the “main goal is to celebrate and empower people that society routinely ignores and rejects.”
“Support from white people and heterosexual people is appreciated but is not necessary for the success of this event,” she noted, writing in another comment that “inclusion is not inherently good, and exclusion is not inherently bad.”
An exchange reportedly occurred on Facebook between those affiliated with the magazine and several outsiders. One user with the name, Thor Menslage, questioned whether this event was considered “racism” by excluding “whites.”
Defenders of the event responded to Menslage’s comment by writing that “there have literally been whites-only establishments that were government sanctioned and approved.”
“So you’re saying that because segregation happened, it’s fine to be racist against Whites?” responded Menslage, which triggered another student Katie Gee to write that “equality is just more cishet [cisgender heterosexual] white supremacist patriarchy trying to write the narrative.”
“We have a host of liberal organizations who regularly pass around anti-white propaganda,” according to an anonymous UTSA student in a report from Campus Reform. “Our campus does nothing about this, doesn’t label it hate speech, won’t remove it, etc.”
However, UTSA Chief Communications Officer Joe Izbrand informed Campus Reform that the “No Whites Allowed” flyer had, in fact, been removed upon its discovery by university officials.
“This flyer showed up on Feb. 15,” he said. “It was not approved or authorized by the university and was not affiliated with any campus organization or event. It was immediately removed.”
