Pipe Bomb Explodes Under New York City Port Authority

There are reports of an explosion at Port Authority in New York City. Multiple emergency response crews are on the scene, including the bomb squad. Police say the situation is contained.

A pipe bomb has exploded below the Port Authority near 42nd street between 8th and 9th ave. Fire officials said the report of an explosion came in around 7:19 AM. Reports indicate the bomb went off prematurely. The suspect had wires attached to him and was armed with a five-inch metal pipe bomb and battery pack

The A, C, and E subway lines are being evacuated at this time. Multiple ambulances are on the scene. A total of 4 injuries were reported at the scene of an explosion at Port Authority, however, all injuries are non-life-threatening. The suspect was taken to Bellevue Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

All MTA trains are bypassing the Port Authority and 42 St. stops as police investigated the incident.

The Port Authority is a transportation hub where buses and trains operate. The main gateway for interstate buses into Manhattan in New York City, the terminal is owned and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The bus terminal is located in Midtown at 625 Eighth Avenue between 40th Street and 42nd Street, one block east of the Lincoln Tunnel and one block west of Times Square. It is one of three bus terminals operated by the PANYNJ, the others being the George Washington Bridge Bus Station in Upper Manhattan and the Journal Square Transportation Center in Jersey City.

Port Authority is the largest bus terminal in the United States, with about 232,000 commuters using the terminal daily.
