After nine weeks of college football, there is a contest between two Big 12 powerhouses. These teams are the Oklahoma Sooners and the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Both teams started the season with similar goals as both teams hoped to compete for a national championship. Oklahoma State was ranked in the AP preseason top ten rankings and was expected to compete for a college football playoff spot under coach Mike Gundy. Oklahoma State is currently the 11th ranked team in the college football rankings and will look to remain in playoff contention. Meanwhile, Oklahoma is ranked the fifth best team in the country and will look to join the top four with a victory this weekend.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys started off their season extremely well and won their first three games by over 30 points each. The Cowboys looked like a potential candidate to win the NCAA championship. However, the Cowboys got upset by conference rival TCU at home and fell in the rankings as a result. Since that upset loss, the Cowboys have won four consecutive games including a hard fought victory at West Virginia.

Oklahoma State’s success is due to star quarterback Mason Rudolph. So far this season, Rudolph has thrown for 22 touchdowns and only five interceptions along with over 2,800 yards passing in just eight games. Rudolph has also rushed for seven touchdowns this season and will look to stay in the Heisman race against Oklahoma on Saturday. Rudolph entered the season with the hopes of receiving a first round projection in the upcoming NFL Draft. If Rudolph continues to play like he has in the first nine weeks, he will be a lock to be selected in the first round.

The Oklahoma Sooners started off their season extremely well and defeated a top five ranked Ohio State team in their second game of the season. The Sooners carried that momentum towards a 4-0 record and looked like a favorite to win the NCAA championship. However, Oklahoma was upset by Iowa State which damaged their 2017 title hopes. Since then, the Sooners have won three straight games and are once again competing for a national title. Leading Oklahoma is none other than senior quarterback Baker Mayfield. This season, Mayfield has thrown for 23 touchdowns and over 2,600 yards along with three interceptions. Last year, Mayfield carried his team to a 38-20 victory over Oklahoma State and he will look to duplicate that performance on Saturday. If Mayfield gets going, expect Oklahoma State’s defense to struggle.

As for my prediction, I have to side with Oklahoma. I think that Mayfield will be too much for this Oklahoma defense to handle as Mayfield leads the Sooners to a victory in an extremely high scoring contest.
