For the first time since 2008’s Call of Duty: World At War, the popular first-person-shooter franchise returns to its roots with the release of this year’s Call of Duty: WWII. Rather than set in space or the near future like recent titles this year’s game is set during the second World War and will transport players back in time to the horrifying events that occurred throughout Europe.

Developed by Sledgehammer Games, one of Activision’s three developers for the franchise, Call of Duty: WWII sets its sights on reshaping the future of the franchise. Rather than focusing on the already stellar multiplayer and “Zombies” sections of the game, Sledgehammer Games is trying to revitalize the Call of Duty campaign with a story of a band of soldiers trying to survive through the final stages of the war. This effort to “humanize” the series that some have written off as a “mindless FPS” is surely one that will help win back some previous fans and new ones too.

While the game’s story may be taking the front seat on this new title, don’t think the game’s multiplayer and “Zombies” mode will be slacking because of it. Sledgehammer has already been showing off some rad maps for the game’s multiplayer and have been teasing the “Nazi Zombies” campaign that looks seriously terrifying! With all this effort put into revitalizing the franchise, Call of Duty: WWII looks one of the fall’s most promising titles!

Call of Duty: WWII will release on November 3rd, 2017 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC systems! Fans who pre-order the game in advance will receive the Multiplayer Upgrade, which gives players a Weapon Unlock Token! This token will allow players to trade it in for any weapon of their choosing, potentially allowing low level players access to advanced weaponry reserved for those higher up! Also, players will have double-XP for their first four hours of their multiplayer experience. Additionally, those who pre-order will receive a “Nazi Zombie camo” skin for the game.

Call of Duty: WWII Gameplay Details:

Main Campaign:

Set on reeling the franchise back from the setting of Space in the last game, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, Sledgehammer Games has turned the dial back to the beginning of the franchise in Call of Duty: WWII. The game’s campaign, which has been the star of it’s marketing, will tell the raw and visceral tale of a band of brothers in the European theater of conflict. Beginning just as the Allied forces are gaining power over the Axis, the American twelve man 1st Infantry Division must fight their way through occupied France and Belgium right into the heart of Germany to finally end the war.

Sledgehammer has spent the last three years working on this game and the level of craftsmanship and dedication to realism is showing. The title features stunning visuals and almost lifelike character models to help fully realize the story and give players a way to experience the horrors of the war through this game.

Nazi Zombies Campaign:

With the game turning the dial back to the beginning, Sledgehammer Games has taken the opportunity to also take players back to the beginning of the “Zombies” mode with this year’s “Nazi Zombies” campaign! Taking the “Zombies” mode back to its roots, Call of Duty: WWII‘s “Nazi Zombies” campaign set in an alternate universe where Nazis have figured out how to bring back the dead.

While the main game’s campaign may be getting a massive overhaul, Sledgehammer has put the same amount of love and attention to the “Nazi Zombies” campaign with its amazing cast of characters and the really creepy horror vibes. Starring David Tennant, Ving Rhames, and Daredevil Season 2’s Elodie Yung the campaign will follow a group of people trying to learn of the Nazi’s secret plans and to stop them from raising the dead!

Multiplayer:

As the game is returning to the battlegrounds of World War II, the game’s multiplayer will be following suit. Featuring a classic boots on-the-ground gameplay, the game will have players playing as either the Allies or the Axis. Those playing as the Allied will be either American, British or French Resistance soldiers; those on the Axis will only play as Germans. Also instead of the classic “create-a-class” of the previous games, players will have to choose between five different classes that all have different weapons, skills, and training. Those skill classes are:

Infantry: Mid to long range combat. Most versatile of the group.
Airborne: Players move faster while remaining quiet. Players are faster and more silent than other players allowing for them to run around and attack quick.
Armored: This division has the heaviest firepower, specializing in heavy machine guns and rocket launchers.
Mountain: Long range combat. Multiple assists to help people who primarily stay as a sniper.
Expeditionary: Shotguns used by players in this division have incendiary rounds that burn enemies to death.
