On September 16, undefeated boxer Gennady Golovkin will square off against Canelo Alvarez in the most highly anticipated boxing title fight of the year. Both fighters are well-known in the sport due to their electrifying knockout power. Both fighters have over 30 knockouts in their professional careers and each fighter will look to add another one to their collection on Saturday night.
Gennady Golovkin, the slight favorite in this contest, boasts a professional boxing record of 37 wins and no losses. Known for his vicious power and fast reflexes, Golovkin has always overpowered his opponents throughout his career and has 33 knockout victories to show for it. Golovkin has become a boxing star and has been given the nickname “GGG” or “Triple G” because his first, middle and last names all start with the same letter. Originating in Kazakhstan, one could not have predicted the type of popularity and stardom that he has received in the United States. If Golovkin can defeat Alvarez, he might become the unofficial face of boxing and could be considered to be the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
Golovkin’s opponent, Canelo Alvarez, is definitely a worthy opponent. Alvarez has a professional boxing record of 49-1-1 with his one loss coming to Floyd Mayweather Jr. back in 2013. Since that defeat, Alvarez has won seven straight fights including a victory over Liam Smith for the WBO Light Middleweight title. Alvarez was always considered to be a phenomenal boxer in his home country of Mexico. However, Alvarez was relatively unknown in the United States before defeating “Sugar” Shane Mosley in 2012. Alvarez’s fame and popularity continued to rise and hit its peak with his vicious knockout against Amir Khan in 2016. After the Khan and Smith fights, Alvarez had to defeat Mexican legend Julio Cesar Chavez (50-3-1) which he did in a unanimous decision. At long last, Alvarez will have a chance to defeat arguably the best boxer in the world and will look to blemish Golovkin’s undefeated record. If Alvarez can successfully pull off this slight upset, Alvarez will become the premier name in the sport if boxing.
I personally believe that this will be the best boxing fight fans will see for several years. The amount of uncertainty and unpredictability present within this fight adds to the anticipation and to the excitement. Both fighters possess elite punch power and can win the fight at any moment with one clean shot. Alvarez is eight years younger than his opponent so one might assume that he has better stamina. However, both fighters are in phenomenal shape and I expect this fight to be extremely even throughout.
As for my prediction, I am going to side with Golovkin by decision. I think that Golovkin will start to wear Alvarez down in the middle rounds similarly to every fighter that GGG has fought in the past. I think that Alvarez will hit Golovkin with multiple combinations throughout the entire fight but I think that Golovkin is simply on a different level and will use his vast array of strikes to make Alvarez extremely uncomfortable.
