Hurricane Irma upgraded to a Category 5 storm late Friday evening while making landfall in Cuba. Irma first touched down on the Camaguey Archipelago of Cuba at around 11 PM (local time) with sustained winds as high as 160 mph.
As of 11 PM EST, Hurricane Irma remains roughly 300 miles away from Miami. The storm is moving west at 13 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. Irma is on the move and is expected to make landfall in Florida by Sunday morning.
For those trying to flee Florida, the Miami airports is still open. But the Fort Lauderdale’s airport is closed on Saturday and Sunday.
An estimated 20 people have died from Irma in the Caribbean. In Florida, a 57-year-old man died by falling off a ladder, as he was attempting to install storm shutters in a Broward County home.
Hurricane warnings have currently been issued in areas of Cuba, the Bahamas, and Florida.
