Gas Leak Causes Explosion At Murray State University Dorm

An explosion rocked a dorm on the campus of Murray State University on Wednesday, June 28.

According to Calloway County Emergency Management Director Bill CallCall, the explosion at the New Richmond dorm on the Murray State campus could have been caused by a gas leak. However, Kentucky State Police say they are not ready to confirm for sure that it was a gas explosion.

Similarly, a Murray Calloway County Hospital spokeswoman said the hospital is treating one person who was injured in the explosion. The injured person is 26-year-old Murray State employee Dakota Fields, who is in stable condition.

The explosion happened at 4:35 PM.

University Advancement Vice President Adrienne King says there were two confirmed injuries. The person who was taken to the hospital was a school employee, and that person was transported from the scene by emergency workers. KSP trooper Jody Cash says the Murray State employee who was hurt is 26-year-old Dakota Fields. He is still in stable condition

King says a second person was hurt in the explosion, but that person was treated at the scene and released. We do not know that person’s identity.

Multiple local emergency and law enforcement agencies were on the scene, as well as the Kentucky Office of Emergency Management, State Fire Marshall’s Office, and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Furthermore, King said that the New Richmond dorm is still an active scene. She asked everyone is asked to stay away from the area until the all clear is given.

Murray State University, located in Murray, Kentucky, has a population of about 10,500 students.
