Josh Jackson, a phenomenal standout freshman from University of Kansas, declared for the 2017 NBA Draft after the NCAA season wrapped up. Projected as a top five overall pick, he is one-ticket away from making a trove full of money in the NBA and through lucrative endorsements.
Jackson, a 6’8” small forward from the Jayhawks basketball team, averaged 16.3 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.7 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game during his freshman campaign.
According to Hoops Hype, even though he does not have a clear endorsement deal from a major brand, he is expected to sign with Nike’s rival, Adidas. The reason seems to be that Jackson played basketball at Kansas in college, which has an endorsement deal with Adidas.
Before he was drafted, Dragan Bender of the Phoenix Suns (4th pick of the NBA 2016 Draft), locked in a lucrative salary of $3,563,600 for one season and guaranteed a maximum four year rookie contract worth $19,302,919. Assuming Jackson is taken with the same pick, he’ll likely sign a similar rookie contract.
Furthermore, just like the NFL, NBA rookie contracts are scaled, meaning you are paid based on where you are drafted.
Based on the NBA’s rookie pay scale, a #3 overall drafted player makes a little under $4 million in their first year. In year two, Jackson is scheduled to make just a little over $3.7 million, and in year three ,$3,884,400. The fourth and fifth years of the contract are options, but if Jackson pans out, he will most likely sign an entirely new contract before then.
