Brussels Central Station in Belgium has been evacuated after an explosion. The suspect, who was reportedly wearing an “explosive belt,” has been shot by authorities. The situation is said to be under control.

What Happened?

Belgian police reportedly shot a suspect wearing an “explosive belt” at Brussels central train station. Military swarmed the city center after unconfirmed reports of a blast inside.

Police tweeted to say the “incident involving an individual” was under control.

Local media reported that a man wearing an explosive belt had been “neutralised.” The main square has been evacuated. No other casualties have been reported so far.

“There was an accident at Central Station. There was an explosion around a person. That person was neutralized by the soldiers that were on the scene,” a police spokesperson told reporters, as cited by Reuters.

“At the moment, the police are in numbers at the station and everything is under control.”

“According to initial findings, there is not much damage, but more details are missing for now,” federal police said regarding reports of an explosion, as reported by Het Laatste Nieuws.

“The incident is still under investigation,” Peter De Waele of the federal police said.

It is unknown if this is a terror-related incident. Bomb squads were called in for fear of additional explosives in the area.

Eye witnesses are tweeting photos and videos of the scene.

In March 2016, 32 people died in attacks on Brussels airport and the metro system which were claimed by the Islamic State (IS) group.
