On Tuesday, the Ole Miss Rebels were dealt a devastating blow, as an X-ray revealed that their starting shortstop Grae Kessinger had a fracture in his foot. Making matters even more frustrating for Ole Miss fans is how Kessinger broke his foot in the first place.
Here’s The Oxford Eagle with the scoop.
Freshman shortstop Grae Kessinger will miss the rest of the season with a broken foot, his father, Kevin, said. Kessinger, the former Oxford High standout, had been playing with an injury, but an X-ray on Tuesday revealed a fracture, Kevin said.
Surgery has not yet been scheduled.
Ole Miss later said in a statement that Kessinger suffered the fracture during “a freak accident” while playing ping pong in the players’ lounge at the SEC Tournament.
Baseball players are the best when it comes to injuring themselves in bizarre fashion. Kessinger’s injury ranks right up there with some of my other favorites such as Marty Cordova falling asleep in a tanning bed, Trevor Bauer cutting himself on a drone, and Joel Zumaya rocking out too hard while playing Guitar Hero.
But as all Beerfest fans know, Kessinger’s ping pong mishap could’ve been a helluva lot worse.
The timing of the injury was terrible for the Rebels, as the SEC Tournament began on Tuesday, and without Kessinger at shortstop, they lost 5-4 to Auburn and were sent home. Stay safe out there, everybody. The ping pong gods are a cruel bunch.
