Greek actress Mary Tsoni, recognized for her breakout role in award-winning 2009 film Dogtooth, was found dead inside her Athens apartment Monday. She was 30.
Mary Tsoni Cause of Death
Tsoni was found unconcious inside her home by friend and fellow actress, Lewsha Camille Simboura.
Friends close to the starlet alleged Tsoni had been battling “severe depression” at the time of her passing, according to the Greek Hollywood Reporter.
The official cause of death is yet to be determined.
Simboura described the incident on her social media page.
“Can’t believe I just found Mary Tsoni dead on the 5th floor. RIP…Sorry I didn’t come sooner. Maybe we could have saved you.”
Simboura said that a friend of hers tried to administer CPR at the scene in an attempt to revive her.
“I feel guilty, as I watched James perform CPR. I should have tried to help you with your sickness.”
Tsoni starred as the unnamed youngest daughter in Yorgos Lanthimos’ cinematic black comedy, Dogtooth, starring a family of five who live an strangely sheltered home life under the parents’ bizarre brainwashing rituals.
The movie was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 2011 Academy Awards. Tsoni won the title of Best Actress for her role in the movie at the Sarajevo Film Festival.
The young actress is also known for her roles in the 2005 and 2009 zombie horror films Evil and Evil: In the Time of Heroes.
