The first official trailer for Denis Villeneuve’s Blade Runner 2049 – starring Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Robin Wright, Barkhad Abdi, Ana de Armas, Mackenzie Davis, Jared Leto, Edward James Olmos and former WWE Champion Dave Bautista – is here. Feast your eyes on its gritty grimness and goes-to-11 tonal volume. It’s pretty dope.
“There is an order to things,” Wright’s character intones at the opening of the trailer’s teaser. “That’s what we do here: We keep order.” Yeah, that and run blades, obviously. Villeneuve’s sequel picks up some time after Ridley Scott’s 1984 Blade Runner left off and is the director’s second straight sci-fi film following the incredible Arrival.
Reviving classics is all the rage in Hollywood these days as can be seen with Star Wars, Fuller House and a million other old-but-new projects. The difference here is that the original Blade Runner is considered by many to be the greatest sci-fi film of all time. Hopping back into the pond is not without its risks.
At the same time, Villeneuve has proven himself to be a damn good director and the cast he’s assembled for this high-risk/high-reward sequel is impressive. On top of that, everything we’ve seen from 2049 looks absolutely fantastic. There’s a real sense of atmosphere and tone in all of the promo materials.
The movie will have the unenviable task of walking the tightrope of paying respect to the original while also establishing itself as its own story that can stand apart. That way, both older fans of the 1984 film and viewers who have never even seen the original can enjoy it.
Or, you know, 2049 can just show us a bunch of cool robot s—. That’s always a winning recipe.
