Given how successful the hockey wunderkind has been in the NHL, it begs the question how much is this young phenom actually worth?

Connor McDavid’s Net Worth as of 2017: $1 Million

How did McDavid get there? And how has his versatile skill set enabled him to accumulate this type of worth? Let’s find out.

McDavid made an intriguing first impression on the hockey world when he debuted for the minor hockey team York-Simcoe Express of the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA). From there, McDavid quickly transitioned to the Toronto Marlboros of the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL). During the 2011-2012 season, McDavid recorded 79 goals, 103 assists for 209 points. McDavid’s sensational abilities on the ice earned him the individual accolade of GTHL Player of the Year.

As a result of his exceptional play in the minors, McDavid was allowed to enter the 2012 OHL Priority Selection at age 15. McDavid was selected first overall by the Erie Otters and despite his age he proved to be one of the most exciting players to watch in the junior league. McDavid scored a point in 15 consecutive games and by March 9, 2013 recorded his 37th assist of the season, setting a new team record for assists by a rookie. By March 16, 2013, McDavid surpassed Tim Connolly for most points as rookie at 66. Aside from the numerous rookie awards McDavid accumulated, his composure and professionalism on the ice earned him the William Hanley Trophy, which is rewarded the OHL’s most sportsmanlike player.

His final season with the Erie Otters in 2014 looked to be one of his best initially before breaking his hand in November. Although McDavid played in only 47 games on the season, he still managed to record an impressive 44 goals and 76 assists (he finished third in the OHL in scoring). McDavid carried his impressive performances over from the regular season into playoffs where he scored 21 goals and recorded 28 assists. Following the end of the 2014-2015 season, McDavid was awarded with the Red Tilson Trophy as the OHL Player of the Year and was also honored as the CHL Player of the Year. McDavid is currently the most decorated and accomplished player in OHL history.

He reportedly earned $70,000 in 2014.

Given McDavid’s domination and consistency in the OHL, it was not a surprise that the immensely talented 18-year-old was selected first overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2015 NHL Draft. Although McDavid missed a fair amount of time during his inaugural NHL season due to a broken clavicle, he still managed to finish third in the voting for the NHL Rookie of the Year award (he only played in 45 games).

Before the start of the 2016 season, McDavid was named the captain of the Oilers, making him the youngest captain in NHL history (he was 19 years and 266 days old at the time).

The 2016 regular season proved to be a redemption year for McDavid as he recorded 30 goals and 70 assists. His versatile abilities as a scorer rightly earned him the Art Ross Trophy, which is given to the NHL’s leading scorer.

Thus far in playoffs, McDavid has been a vital component of the Oilers impressive showing in the post season. With five goals and four assists in 12 games, McDavid has been the catalyst both as a statistical juggernaut and as a inspiring leader. Currently, the Oilers are deadlocked with the Anaheim Ducks at three games a piece in the Western Conference Semi-Final round. If the Oilers can win a critical Game 7 in Anaheim, they will have clinched a spot in the Western Conference Finals, something they have not accomplished since 2006.

While McDavid is still young, he has clearly displayed an ability to be a great individual and team player. It would have been easy for McDavid to ingratiate himself given all of the recognition and praise he received as a teenager. Instead, McDavid has remained humble while inspiring his teammates to reach their potential as consummate competitors. Given what he has already accomplished as a professional athlete, it seems inevitable that McDavid will lead the Oilers back into prominence as being a highly competitive and successful NHL franchise.

He reportedly earned $925,000 in 2017.
