At first, I thought this story was going to be about Bombay Sapphire recalling their gin because gin is f*cking disgusting. I’ve actually read studies that if gin is your drink of choice, you’re more likely to be a psychopath. And I’m all in on that science being true, because I cannot wrap my head around any remotely sane person choosing to drink gin. With all the alcohols in the world, why someone would choose the one that tastes the most like isopropyl smells is beyond reason.
Much to my surprise, the Bombay gin was not recalled because it’s essentially the devil’s water, but because inspectors found that the alcohol content was nearly double the level advertised on the bottle.
The bottles of Bombay Sapphire gin were found to have a 77% alcohol content as opposed to the advertised 40%.
Ontario’s Liquor Control Board was the first agency to report the latest incident, telling the consumer to return bottles of Bombay Sapphire brand London Dry Gin “due to high alcohol content.”
Four other provinces soon followed, telling consumers we that their money would be refunded. Bacardi, the maker of Bombay Sapphire Gin, said the affected batch is believed to have been sold only in Canada.
According to a statement from the Ontario Liquor Control Board, the problem was traced back to the production line:
‘One batch was bottled before correct dilution to achieve the stated 40 percent alcohol content by volume. As a result, the affected batch has alcohol content by volume of 77 percent,’ it said.
Bacardi said the recall was launched after “an isolated consumer complaint and subsequent quality assurance checks.” The company also said that up to 6,000 Bombay Sapphire bottles of gin may be affected.
According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, no illnesses associated with consumption of the gin have been reported.
