John W. Gose, a 56-year-hold high school science teacher in New Mexico, may be a big Breaking Bad fan. The teacher has pleaded guilty to cooking up crystal meth in an eerily similar case to the hit AMC TV show.
What Happened?
Gose has plead guilty to four counts relating to the manufacture and trafficking of meth amphetamine at Las Cruces courthouse in New Mexico. He was arrested following a traffic stop in which officers noticed suspicious equipment in his vehicle.
Gose has been a science teacher at Irvin High School in El Paso, Texas, for eight and a half years. He also taught in Onate High School and with Las Cruces Public Schools.
Las Cruces Police Department arrested Gose during a traffic stop on October 2, 2016, according to Dona Ana County District Attorney Mark D’Antonio.
In his car, the officer found a white, Styrofoam ice chest containing glassware, rubber tubing and chemicals. Following a forensic examination of the equipment, authorities determined Gose could use the materials to manufacture crystal meth. New Mexico State police later found further chemicals and supplies at his home during a raid.
One estimation of the chemicals and materials suggested Gose could have produced up to one pound of the drug which has a street value of $44,800.
In a statement, D’Antonio said: “That the defendant in this case chose to plead guilty to all of the charges is a testament to the strength of the investigation.
“Thanks to the hard work of the Las Cruces Police Department, the New Mexico State Police and the prosecutors in this office, we are able to close the books on this case of life imitating art while saving the taxpayers of New Mexico the cost of a jury trial.”
Prosecutors said Gose is facing a possible jail term of 20 years and six months. He has been ordered to undergo a 6-day “diagnostic evaluation” by the New Mexico Department of Corrections.
Breaking Bad
The hit TV show on AMC featured Bryan Cranston playing New Mexico high school chemistry teacher Walter White who begins manufacturing crystal meth after he is diagnosed with cancer to earn extra money for his family. The series was universally praised by fans and critics alike during its five-season run from 2008-2013.
