Gorillaz released their sixth studio album, titled The Now Now, on June 29th, 2018. Gorillaz is a British band known for their combination of rock, electronic and hip-hop music and their virtual personas. The band is primarily composed of musician Damon Albarn and comic book artist Jamie Hewlett, although more probably know the created characters of 2-D, Ace, Noodle, Russel Hobbs and Murdoc Niccals who appear in the band’s music videos and “perform” in concert.

Gorillaz put out their fifth studio album, Humanz, in April of 2017. Humanz was recorded over a year and half time period and came out seven years after their last album. The Now Now marks a much faster recording session as most of the music was recorded in February of 2018 for a release just fourth months later. Albarn has stated that one of the main reasons for the recording of their latest album was to have more to play during the live tour which is currently in progress, hence the reason for the quick turnaround.

Since the band’s inception in 2000 three of their albums have reached the top 10 of the Billboard Top 200 charts, with two albums peaking at the #2 spot with Humanz and their 2010 album Plastic Beach.

Gorillaz released their newest album, “The Now Now”, on Friday, June 29, 2018. Having already released an album just a year ago that received very mixed reviews, the virtual band was quick to make a recovery with this years release. prior to the release, they had already put out four of the tracks on their youtube channel, with Jack Black even making a guest appearance in one. The music video for the song ‘Humility’ features Black dancing around Venice with the animated band members jamming all around him, it’s reminiscent of classic Gorillaz anarchy and certainly worth a watch. As usual with the Gorillaz, the album is expected to be chock-full of cameos as well, and Snoop, Jamie Principle and George Benson are all confirmed to be featured on some of the tracks.

Jean-Claude Van Damme Net Worth 2018: How Much Is JCVD Worth?

$

0

Along with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, the Belgian actor, stuntman and martial artist is known as Jean-Claude Van Damme is a part of the trinity of uber-masculine, hard to understand actors who dominated the action movie scene of the 1980s. Unlike his equally incomprehensible counterparts, however, Van Damme never really learned to adapt his screen presence to the more nuanced films of today and, unfortunately, has largely fallen out of pop culture’s scope. As a man who helped define an entire era of cinema, JCVD has more than earned his spot in the Hollywood pantheon, but in the money-making and cutthroat movie industry, your worth to a studio is only reflected in how much you’re worth period.

Jean-Claude Van Damme Net Worth 2018: $30 Million

Instagram Photo

Despite not being a prominent figure in movies for quite some time, Van Damme still boasts an impressive fortune based mostly on his stature as one of the biggest movie stars of yesteryear. Though not the least successful of his muscular, oiled-up brethren, he still has more money than Dolph Lundgren, he still ranks lower than most of his fellow 80s’ actors.

Early Years

Instagram Photo

Born Jean-Claude Camille Francois Van Varenberg on October 18, 1960, in Berchem-Sainte-Agathe, Brussels, Belgium, the man who would later adopt the moniker Van Damme was always an eclectic mind. At age ten, he began to show the proclivity for martial arts that would go on to define his entire life. He took courses in Shotokan Karate, Kickboxing, Tae Kwon Do, Muay Thai and even studied ballet for five years in part to help him increase his flexibility. He would later claim that ballet was the most difficult athletic enterprise he ever undertook, saying “If you can survive a ballet workout, you can survive a workout in any other sport.”

By age fifteen, Van Damme was competing in karate tournaments around Europe. His talent for combat sports was evident and he amassed an impressive record of 44-4. In this same period, he took up bodybuilding and was named Mr. Belgium in competition.

1980-1990

Instagram Photo

Though he got his first film role, an uncredited extra in a Belgian-French drama, in 1979, it wasn’t until 1982 when Van Damme retired from competitive martial arts to fully pursue an acting career. His impressive physique and chiseled looks earned him some early bit roles, but his star didn’t truly begin to rise until he met and became friends with action movie legend and the man who counted to infinity twice, Chuck Norris. Norris was impressed by Van Damme’s martial arts background and hired him as a bar bouncer and sparring partner. He even got Van Damme his first job behind the camera as a stunt coordinator on Norris’s 1984 film Missing in Action.

His connection to Norris continuously brought Van Damme close to breaking into mainstream popularity, but it took him some time to break the glass ceiling. He was originally slated to be the classic monster movie icon the Predator in the movie of the same name, but was replaced at the last minute. He finally got his big break in 1986 as the Russian villain in No Retreat, No Surrender. His eastern European accent and Adonis-level body made him a perfect foil for an American protagonist and he applied his real-life kickboxing skills to introduce audiences to a new style of screen combat.

He proved his chops as a box office draw in his back-to-back 1988 roles in Black Eagle and perhaps his most famous film BloodsportBloodsport in particular endeared him to Cannon Film Studios who regularly used him as an action star until the company folded in 1994. These projects included the cyberpunk fighting film Cyborg and Van Damme’s first franchise film Kickboxer.

1991-2000

Instagram Photo

Van Damme’s success continued well into the 1990s’. Films like Death Warrant, LionheartDouble Impact and Universal Soldier hid his fairly limited acting range, put him in collaborations with some of Hollywood’s best directors and helped him develop his signature style and tropes. His films regularly grossed tens of millions and he reached his peak as an action movie star. Then he signed on to Street Fighter and things started to go downhill.

Based on the popular arcade game, Street Fighter was a commercial success but critics tore into Van Damme, who it seemed had finally exposed his lack of acting ability. After the collapse of Cannon, Van Damme was shuffled over to Universal and Columbia studios. Both studios had bigger budgets, but neither seemed to know how to properly use the lithe and lean Belgian. Sudden DeathThe Quest and Maximum Risk all failed at the box office. Things came to a head with Double Team, which saw Van Damme partnering up with, of all people, Dennis Rodman.

It didn’t help that audience tastes were changing. The burly European action star archetype was giving way to the John McClane everyman hero. Van Damme attempted to capitalize on his fame with a sequel to Universal Soldier, but audiences weren’t receptive anymore, even with WCW star Bill Goldberg as the villain. By 2000, Van Damme had stumbled deep into the direct-to-video brackets of the Hollywood hierarchy. In this time, he’d also developed a nasty cocaine dependency that was hemorrhaging his money and visibly damaging his body.

2001-Present

Instagram Photo

For many years, Van Damme never even made it to movie screens. His projects in this period were almost exclusively foreign films that went straight to tape. He made a valiant attempt at a comeback in 2008 with JCVD, a Belgian movie where he played a reflective version of himself as he gets caught up in a bank robbery. Critics fawned over the film and declared it Van Damme’s best performance, but the movie faltered at the box office and Van Damme slid right back down the totem pole.

More recently, Van Damme has had something of a subtle pop culture renaissance. Most of his films are still unknown works, but he got a voice-over cameo in the Kung Fu Panda franchise and his famous Volvo commercial introduced an entire generation of young viewers to his legendary splits. All in all, Van Damme is still doing pretty well for himself, still has a career and still has time left to remind the world why he was such a big star in the first place.

Ramos’ ruthless attack resulted in the death of five employees; assistant editor and columnist Rob Hiaasen, special publications editor Wendi Winters, writer John McNamara, editorial page editor Gerald Fischman and sales assistant Rebecca Smith.

University of Washington Fraternity Loses Charter Due To Hazing

The Delta Upsilon fraternity at the University of Washington has lost its charter for code of conduct violations that included “hazing in the form of physical beatings, forced consumption of alcohol, intimidation, forced servitude and more.”

According to the Seattle Times, has not been recognized by the university since the beginning of fall 2017 semester due to previous disciplinary issues.

Victor Balta, a spokeswoman for the university, said that the national organization became aware of additional membership issues and potential violations of fraternity policies, and conducted a membership review.

While the Delta Upsilon fraternity’s former president denies the allegations, the national organization will not consider reinstating the chapter until fall 2022.

via Seattle Times:

Delta Upsilon’s violations were outlined in a letter dated June 28 by Robert Lannin, chairman of the Delta Upsilon International Fraternity board of directors. A copy was posted online.

Kasey Truong, who served as president of Delta Upsilon’s UW chapter in 2017-18, called the issues that led to the loss of the chapter “extremely minor.” He said the fraternity’s troubles started when video of a new fraternity member drinking Champagne as part of a voluntary initiation ceremony in summer 2017 was picked up on Snapchat. The UW “saw that as hazing,” he said. “Pretty much having fun was hazing.”

Later, he said, somebody sent an anonymous letter to the university alleging other violations of the fraternity’s charter. “Anonymous letters rule,” he said. “You’re guilty until you’re innocent. It’s all about saving face now.”

This is the latest major fraternity or sorority suspension or closure in the last year, as schools such as Indiana University, the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Texas State, Florida State, Ball State, Louisiana State and Penn State have all suspended fraternities in the wake of hazing and alcohol deaths.

These reports come amidst similar allegations that have been made against fraternities nationwide, including Sigma Alpha Epsilon at East Carolina University, who was shut down for hazing and the Lamda Chi Alpha chapter at the University of Arkansas which has been accused of taking sexually explicit photographs of women without their permission.

In response to incidents like these, fraternities such Phi Kappa Psi have made numerous changes to their code of conduct in an effort to address the issues that have arisen. In addition, schools such as Texas State have introduced new Greek Life rules to try and prevent these problems.

Ramos now faces five counts of first-degree murder for the ruthless attack which resulted in the death of assistant editor and columnist Rob Hiaasen, special publications editor Wendi Winters, writer John McNamara, editorial page editor Gerald Fischman and sales assistant Rebecca Smith.

Ramos had a long-standing history with the Capital Gazette, which included an unsuccessful defamation lawsuit nearly five years ago, and he also had a history of harassing and being abusive towards women.

Now, we are getting even more details about his life, upbringing, and family.

Jarrod Ramos’ Family & Background

Ramos’ father, Miguel Ramos, used to work for the NSA, according to his Facebook profile. He studied at the Data Processing Institute and also worked for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. Miguel Ramos would regularly post about his son, including birthday wishes on Dec. 21.

On Jarrod’s 38th birthday, Miguel posted a series of photos with himself holding his son alongside another woman, though it is not known whether the woman was his wife or Ramos’ step-mother.

Texas State Fraternity Reads The University’s New Rules, Decides Its Not Even Worth It

The Kappa Sigma Theta fraternity at Texas State University has decided not to return to the Interfraternity Council after reviewing the administration’s new rules.

Following the death of fraternity pledge Matthew Ellis, a 20-year-old Phi Kappa Psi pledge that passed away in November, Texas State University formed a task force to review the governing policies for Greek affairs.

After the review, Greek life was reinstated at the university on March 1, 2018, with the condition that the fraternities sign off on the updated code of conducts. All of the fraternities at the university signed, except one.

Sam Zablosky, the president of the Kappa Sigma Theta fraternity, said they felt that university’s process “was not entirely fair.”

via Texas State:

“There was some ambiguous stuff that rose some concerns for me,” Zablosky said. “I didn’t want to sign something I wasn’t sure about. When I met with the IFC president, (Jake) Negvesky, and told him I had thoughts of not re-signing with the IFC, that didn’t sit well with the school.”

Some fraternity members said they feel that the new rules have too many restrictions. New implementations include a restricted rushing season, an altered pledge process, mandated training before all social events and monthly reports to be submitted to the Greek Affairs Office.

Seth McNeill, IFC vice president of recruitment and Theta Chi treasurer, said it was important to extend the length of recruitment and shorten the new member period. McNeill said this allows chapters to educate more students about history, creed and values.

This is the latest major Greek life overhaul in the last year, as schools such as Indiana University, the University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Texas State, Florida State, Ball State, Louisiana State and Penn State have all suspended fraternities in the wake of hazing and alcohol deaths.

NFC East 2018: Draft Picks To Watch

$

The Eagles have arguably the best-constructed roster in the NFL, led by a quarterback performing at a very high level on his rookie contract. They have a great chance to make another run at the Super Bowl this year, but who knows what’ll happen. Some of the other squads in the NFC East are looking to follow their same model, but will it work? Only time will tell.

New York Giants

Instagram Photo

Will Hernandez

Saquon Barkley was arguably the best player in the draft, and he should help prolong Eli Manning’s career by taking 20-25 carries per game. You could also put him in this spot very easily. But, the Giants offensive line was terrible last year. They gave up 34 sacks and were only able to muster 1500 yards on the ground through all of 2017.

Hernandez will help change that, as he is an excellent run blocker and can hold his own in pass protection. He will be best utilized as a pulling guard who leads the way for Barkley. Hernandez might be the biggest reason that Barkley wins Rookie of the Year. If you’re watching the Giants this year, keep an eye on the man in the neck roll.

Philadelphia Eagles

Instagram Photo

Dallas Goedert

The second round tight end from South Dakota State is going to fit right in with the Eagles offense. He’s a great pass catcher and proficient route runner and will be another big target for Carson Wentz. Brent Celek is old, and Trey Burton has moved on to the Chicago Bears, so Goedert will probably see the field early and often.

The Eagles don’t have a lot of holes on their roster, but Goedert might make the biggest impact of any rookie. Keep an eye on second-year cornerback Sidney Jones, who the Eagles stole in the second round of last year’s draft. Some scouts had him ranked as the best cornerback in last year’s class, and he’ll definitely see the field a lot more in year two.

Washington Redskins

Instagram Photo

Derrius Guice

Arguably the biggest steal of the entire draft, the Redskins found a bell cow back who can truly carry the load. He is already the most talented back on the roster, and might even be the Week One starter.

Some concerns from his combine interview forced his stock to slide into round two, but Washington needed a running back and got the second best one in the class. He can catch the ball out of the backfield and has a rare combination of power and speed that could lead to being a star in the NFL for a long time.

Dallas Cowboys

Instagram Photo

Connor Williams

This was an awesome pick for the Cowboys. Not only did they pick a Texas product, who was able to walk across the stage at the draft at home in Dallas, but they picked an excellent offensive lineman who can play tackle or guard at the next level.

Williams is projected to start at left guard and would be a much better option than Byron Bell or Chaz Green at left tackle if Tyron Smith gets hurt again. Some teams had Williams rated as a first-round prospect, and the Cowboys stole him to add to an offensive line that is arguably already the best in the league. Williams should adjust to playing guard quite easily, and be a great addition to the Cowboy line.

‘Game Of Thrones’ Star Says Season 8 Will Have “More Death” Than All The Previous Seasons

While many people already consider Game Of Thrones to be the most devastating and brutal show they’ve ever seen, apparently we ain’t seen nothin’ yet (I’m paraphrasing here). At least according to Sophie Turner, that is.

In an interview with Gold Derby, Turner, who plays Sansa Stark — the Lady of Winterfell — said that the show’s final season will have “more death” and be “more emotionally torturous” than ever before.

Grrreeaaaaaaat. We’re gonna lose Jon, aren’t we? Yup, we’re definitely going to lose Jon.

via Uproxx:

In an interview with Gold Derby about the upcoming season, actress Sophie Turner teased, “I can tell you that there’s definitely a coming together of people. Everyone is coming together to fight the impending doom. There’s a lot of tension between these little groups, battling for what they think is right. It’s Game of Thrones, so it’s going to be bloodier and more death and more emotionally torturous than all the years before!”

Nikolaj Coster-Waldau would only add that season eight will be “surprising. Enormous. Heartbreaking.” And when asked to describe what’s to come in three more words: “Satisfying, shocking, and… heartbreaking, again.”

Game Of Thrones eighth and final season is expected to premiere sometime during Spring 2019. The season will consist of six episodes and will bring the most successful television show of all-time to a close. And according to Sophie Turner, it’s going to be a devastating final act.

At this time, no official premiere date or trailer for season eight of Game Of Thrones has been released.

Sergio Ramos is a world renown Spanish soccer player currently apart of the Real Madrid soccer team. Ramos has taken part in both the Spanish Club Madrid and Spain national football team and led them to countless victories. He plays both the central defender and right back. He is also the father of Sergio Ramos Rubio with girlfriend journalist Pilar Rubio. Now let’s see how much money this footballer has made through his prominent sports career.

Sergio Ramos 2018 Net Worth: $60 Million

Over the course of his playing career, Ramos has amassed a net worth in the area of $60 Million. Let’s take a look back at how he got to this point.

Early Life: 1986-2005

Instagram Photo

Sergio Ramos was born on March 30th, 1986 in the Camas town of Seville, Spain. Ramos realized his love for soccer at the age of fourteen. He started as a defender. As he got older he really honed his skills. Ramos started his soccer career by playing in his local town’s football cup. Once his skills were up to the standard he went on to participate in the Spanish Club Real Madrid.

Ramos struggled at first trying to gain notoriety for his skills. In 2004, he was finally selected to be apart of the team’s main squad under the youth division. That same year Sergio played for La Liga and managed to become the UEFA U19 champion! At the end of the soccer season, the hard work Ramos had put in finally paid off. Sergio was honored as the La Liga Breakthrough Player of the Year.

Ramos continued to work long hours training to be the best soccer player that he could be, even at his young age. He impressed coaches and fans with his abilities and the wide range of positions he was capable of playing. Most well known for his defensive abilities, Sergio perfected those skills as he got older. Being still one of the youngest members of Spains soccer club team, it took him longer to prove himself. But the wait was definitely worthwhile!

Sergio Then and Now: 2005-Present

Instagram Photo

In March of 2005, Ramos played in his debut match in as apart of the Spanish national team. He was the youngest player on the team, which made him even more of a spectacle to watch. After playing his heart out in the FIFA World Cup of 2006, Sergio was given a permanent position in the main squad. His position was as a defender for the national team.

Ramos became one of the most well-paid players on the Real Madrid soccer team. He received 30 million euros in the summer of 2005. Sergio became a hot commodity at that point. Every football club in Spain wanted him on their team. Ramos was booked with Real Madrid until 2017. While playing for Real Madrid he earned over 4.5 million euros a season.

Sergio has won two gold medals from the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA Euro. As of right now, Ramos has participated in over three hundred matches. He has received the seventeenth position as his overall rating.  Ramos currently also holds the record for most red cards ever obtained by a Real Marid player! I can’t wait to see how he plays this upcoming year! I look forward to seeing Sergio have a long and prosperous soccer career!

Betty Gilpin is an American actress who is best known for portraying Doctor Carrie Roman on Showtime’s Nurse Jackie and as Debbie “Liberty Belle” Eagan in the Netflix comedy series GLOW.

Gilpin, born on July 21, 1986, in New York City, is the daughter of actor Jack Gilpin.

via Vanity Fair:

Though GLOW creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch were open to a wide range of people in casting, they had a pretty clear sense of who Debbie was from the beginning. “I think we had a lot of the character figured out on the page,” Mensch said in a phone call. “I think what Betty beautifully brought to it was her rage was so large that only a wrestling ring could contain it.”

Flahive and Mensch knew Gilpin from their work on Nurse Jackie, where Gilpin played the brusque Dr. Carrie Roman for 34 episodes, as well as the New York theater scene. “We asked her to audition knowing that she was the type of person we were thinking of,” Mensch said. “We knew she was someone who was incredibly smart and incredibly weird and an incredibly talented actress who could go Greek and go tiny nuance.”

Gilpin, the daughter of actors, studied theater and spent 10 years primarily on the New York stage; she sums up most of her film and TV work in that period as “I cried and died in every show you could cry and die on in New York.” She considered herself “hyper-realistic” about working in film and television: “I thought, I’ll feed my soul in this play, and then get health insurance from this multicam about computers in space or something.”

In addition to her appearnaces on Nurse Jackie and GLOW Gilpin has also appeared in Law & Order: SVU, Medium, Fringe and Elementary. She has also appeared off-Broadway in productions such as Heartless, I’m Gonna Pray for You So Hard and We Live Here.

Tuition Increases Approved For Oklahoma Public Colleges

The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education has approved a tuition increase for colleges and universities in the state, bringing the cost of college up an average $224 for the next academic year for full-time undergraduate students.

For some, tuition increases could be as high as $480

The increases average 4% and will range from zero to $480; that said, a year ago, the increases averaged $284, or 5.3%.

In addition, the state is providing an additional $7.5 million to pay for concurrent enrollment tuition waivers for high school seniors statewide; senior high school students in the state will be able to take up to six hours of college credit per semester tuition-free, with colleges having to cover costs not funded by the state.

For some schools, such as the University of Central Oklahoma, the tuition increases will cover tuition waivers for students, although the state has also seen a dwindling number of tuition waivers in recent years due to cuts in state funding.

Four schools will not see tuition increases

According to News Ok, Southeastern Oklahoma State University President Sean Burrage, whose school is one of four institutions in the state not to increase tuitions, discussed how this could be a deterrent to students in the following statement:

“We’re trying to hold the cost down. We serve probably the poorest part of the state.”

“Each year we have more and more students who aren’t re-enrolling because of financial holds on their accounts.”

According to Burrage, the school can afford to keep costs flats due to seeing an increase in online graduate enrollment; the three other schools not increasing prices in the state are the University of Oklahoma, Eastern Oklahoma State College and Murray State College.

Incoming University of Oklahoma President Jim Gallogly added that it will be hard for schools to keep tuition down:

“That’s a very, very difficult thing to do…It’s going to be difficult to balance our budget.”

Everyone loves traveling, but sometimes we can be restricted to go on those vacations because of work. Our jobs can be time-consuming and cause us to get stuck in one part of the world for a long time. Traveling is one of the best activities a person can do, it’s refreshing and educational. Road trips, train rides, plane rides, and cruises are an experience. Now, what if you could travel while doing your work. You would be able to travel the world, work where ever you want, and get paid. Travel journalism will do just that. Here are some tips and advice to help you become a travel journalist.

Have A Blog

Instagram Photo

It’s best that you already have a blog that you have been developing for a while. But, if you are not one of these people don’t get worried, you can quickly create one yourself right now. Editors want to see how well you can write and creative you can be. They want to look at how hard working you are through your writing. Your blog is, basically, your resume for editors. This is your easy starter plan is by creating a blog. You don’t need to worry about followers or likes, what you do need to keep your attention on is your writing. Keep in mind, creating well-crafted blog posts will get editors intrigued and consider you for a position or send you out on gigs. Be creative and find your niche, it can be anything surrounding travel journalism.

Be A Better Guide Than A Travel Guide

Instagram Photo

Here’s something that some people don’t know, you can be passionate about travel and be able to write the best blog posts in the world, but that doesn’t help you qualify to be a travel Journalist. You need to do your research about the place you are writing about, and you can’t just assume and guess; you can’t write your way into getting a good grade. This isn’t college. Think about a travel guidebook, in a small pamphlet is all the information a person needs to do some sightseeing. But, there is more out there to visit than just what is on the booklet. That’s where a travel journalist comes in to save the day. You are the adder to the pamphlet, talk about the food stands people pass by every day but have the best food. Or the secret bars no one has ever heard. Pretend you are the travel guide that wants a promotion. Just try a little extra harder, and it will pay off in the end.

Hard Work, Difficult Pay

Instagram Photo

Some of you need to keep in mind that travel journalism is not a fantasy where you get to travel all over the world, write little assignments here and there, and get paid like you are from the cast of Friends. It will take time to make a commission. If you have experience in this field, it may be a different story for you. But for those who are just starting out, don’t get discouraged. It’s all about time, and this is your job. You need to take a few days to plan and another couple to write. All of that work could equal out to about $500.

Postgraduate Courses Can Be One Of Your Greatest Tools

Instagram Photo

There is no specific degree you need to have in this field. It would be good if you had a journalism or writing degree, but as long as you can write that’s all that matters. Some editors may not look at the specific degree but whether or not you have some postgraduation qualifications. Editors don’t care how long; it could be three years or three months. The skills to help put you in a better position with editors.

Florida Friday: All Of This Week’s Headlines From America’s Most Interesting State-6/29

Oh, Florida — like our wives and girlfriends, we can’t live with you, but we certainly couldn’t live without you. You are like the Drunk Uncle in the family that is the United States of America: you mean well & have a good heart, but show up to the party already hammered and then tell Cousin Derek to go f*ck himself before you fall face first through the all-glass living room coffee table. You’re a wildcard, but you’re our wildcard, and we love ya for it.

For some reason, though, more than any other state in the union, Florida has an uncanny knack of churning out the most preposterous headlines you’ve ever heard of.

“Homeless Man Engages in Sword Fight with Alligator”

“Pink-Haired Couple Rob Bank Armed Only with String Cheese”

“Party Clown Arrested for Smoking Crack in Front of Children”

Are these real stories? Did I just make these headlines up? Who knows. I guess you’ll have to Google it. Either way, the point is they sound real and that’s because in Florida, literally, anything is possible, even the most bizarre.

Okay, I’ll admit, the headlines above you are fake, but the ones below are entirely real, and that’s what makes Florida so Florida: you cannot tell the difference between what’s real and what’s not because it all sounds so wildly ridiculous.

“Teen Bites the Head Off Live Chicken”

“Elementary School Teacher Arrested For Selling Marijuana”

“Police Searching For Cross-Dresser Who Keeps Leaving Underwear On Random Cars”

“Man Causes $100K in Damage at Local Walmart, Blames ‘Hookah Smoking Caterpillar'”

“Teacher Placed on Leave For Drowning Racoons in Class”

“Woman Poses as Federal Agent to Score Free Chick-Fil-A”

“This Chainsaw Wielding Nun is the Hero Florida Deserves Right Now”

“Man Whips Out Samurai Sword During Road Rage Incident”

“Teacher Suspended For Allowing Students to Hook Up in Class”

Needless to say, you get our point: Florida is a mad, mad place.

So with that in mind, we’ve decided to do a weekly round-up of all the headlines from America’s Bastard Son of a State … the only and only Florida.

Al Michaels Net Worth 2018: How Much Is Al Worth?

Al Michaels is one of the most well-known sportscasters in the sporting world. Michaels has been working in the industry for four decades. He has covered many sports and many special moments throughout his illustrious broadcasting career. Two notable moments during his career include the “Miracle on Ice” from the 1980 Olympic games and he famously called the earthquake-interrupted World Series game 3 during the 1989 World Series.

So, how much is Michaels worth?

Al Michaels net worth as of 2018: $20 million

Michaels has become one of the most iconic voices over his multiple decades’ service and he has been compensated well. Michaels worked nearly 30 years for ABC Sports from 1977-2006. After his time at ABC, Michaels moved on to NBC Sports where he currently works to this day.

Early Life

Instagram Photo

Michaels was born on November 12, 1944, in Brooklyn, New York.  After spending the first 14 years of his life in New York, Michaels and his family moved to Los Angeles, California. The move coincidentally coincided with the Dodgers leaving Brooklyn and heading to L.A. as well. This happened to be a fortunate set of developments as Michaels grew up a Dodgers fan.

Michaels attended Arizona State University in 1962. While at ASU Michaels was a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He majored in radio and television and minored in journalism. Michaels also wrote for the school paper, The State Press.

Michaels first sportscasting job came in 1964 working in the public relations department of the Los Angeles Lakers organization. He would eventually transition into the role of color commentary, but his stay with the Lakers would be short, however, as Michaels was fired after disapproval from play-by-play announcer Chuck Hearn.

1968-1976

Following his departure from the Lakers, Michaels joined the Hawaii Islanders of the Pacific Coast League and as the play-by-play announcer of the University of Hawaii’s football and basketball teams. For his outstanding work, Hawaii named Michaels “SportsCaster of the Year” in 1969.

After being recognized for his sportscaster ability Michaels became the lead announcer of the Cincinnati Reds in 1971. Then in 1972, Michaels covered the World Series for NBC Sports and worked as the networks play-by-player announcer during the 1972 Winter Olympics for their ice hockey coverage.

Michaels got his first experience in the NFL when tragically Bill Enis died of a heart attack and Michaels filled his role during the NFL regular season finale between the Houston Oilers and Cincinnati Bengals.

In 1974, Michaels decided to head back to the west coast and cover the San Francisco Giants and UCLA basketball.

1977-2005

Michaels signed on with ABC Sports in 1977 and thus started a nearly three-decades-long tenure with the company. His first job for ABC Sports was as a backup announcer on Monday Night Baseball which he quickly turned into a full-time position.

During his time with ABC Sports, Michaels covered MLB, college football, various Olympic events, ice hockey, college basketball, golf, horse racing, and boxing.

One of the most famous sports moments in American Olympic history the battle between the United States and the Soviet Union in hockey during the 1980 Olympic games dubbed the “Miracle on Ice” was called by Michaels. His famous, “Do you believe in miracles? YES!” line has become one of the most played reactions in sports history.

Michaels also was part of the broadcasting crew during game 3 of the 1989 World Series between the Oakland Athletics and the San Francisco Giants that was interrupted by an earthquake. Before the network feed cut out Michaels can be heard saying, “I’ll tell you what, we are having an earth –“.

Beginning in 1986 Michaels became the lead play-by-play announcer of ABC’s Monday Night Football, a position he held for 20 years. Just three years later after working the Monday Night Football telecast, Michaels called his first NFL Super Bowl between the New York Giants and Buffalo Bills.

During the 2003-2004 NBA season, Michaels replaced Brad Nessler as the lead broadcaster of the NBA. Michaels and Doc Rivers worked together through most of the season and covered all the playoff games.

Following the 2004 season, Michaels appearance commentating NBA games became sporadic, and he was eventually replaced.

Al Michaels would part ways with ABC Sports and ESPN and sign on with NBC Sports in 2006 joining John Madden on the networks Sunday Night Football broadcast. The switch to NBC involved various TV rights being traded in return for the services of Michaels.

During his time with NBC Sports Michaels called four Super Bowl Broadcasts (2009, 2012, 2015, 2018). Michaels is just the third person ever to do the play-by-play for NBC during the Super Bowl following Curt Gowdy and Dick Enberg.

During the 2010 Olympic games Michaels served as the Olympic daytime host it was his first time covering something other than the NFL since he started with NBC. He would go on to cover the 2012, 2014, and 2016 Olympic games in some capacity for NBC.

Michaels is a five-time Emmy Award winner, three-time national sportscaster of the year, and has been ranked a top 50 sportscaster by the American Sportscaster Association, among many other accolades.

The University of Pennsylvania Acknowledges Its Racist Past

The University of Pennsylvania formally announced an initiative to acknowledge its own deeply racist history last Friday. Originally, this issue was brought to light by undergraduate researchers in the fall of 2017 after students found that no fewer than 75 of Penn’s earliest trustees had ownership over another person.

In a statement, Penn President Amy Gutman officially stated, “Penn faculty and alumni were actively involved in framing the Constitution to support slavery and in administering state slavery laws.” Numerous faculty members and alumni were Confederate supporters and routinely used slaves to support themselves.

Among other instances of slavery permeating the reputation of Penn, Gutman noted that the school’s first provost, William Smith, was a slave owner. The school also reimbursed Ebenezer Kinnersley, Penn’s first professor of English, for the work of an enslaved man that he owned for 13 years (1757 to 1770). Dr. John Morgan, the school’s first medical faculty member, was a slave owner as well and helped foster lessons in racial pseudoscience. In addition, Dean William Horner oversaw the entire operation of conducting racial pseudoscience with help from Professor Samuel Morton, Professor Charles Caldwell, and Dr. Samuel Cartwright.

Alumnus and Professor of Mathematics Hugh Williamson played an important rule in making sure the three-fifths clause was included in the US Constitution – a section legally relegating all slaves to only three-fifths the value of a free man.

In response to these findings, Penn is pledging to:

  • Continue research into the school’s ties with slavery
  • Support research into the school’s possible lingering influence of racial pseudoscience in actual medical fields
  • Create a website to be used as a bulletin for all new discoveries about the school’s history
  • Encourage Penn schools and departments to offer informative “programming” about the school’s past

This dramatic release of details regarding Penn’s historically racist past comes wholly as a result of the work done by the Penn Slavery Project, the team of undergraduates and their professor who began looking into possible connections to racial injustice despite the University previously downplaying any involvement.

President Gutman made it clear that she is fully committed to welcoming new evidence and recognizing Penn’s wrongdoing in a statement,

“Penn will continue this effort to learn still more about its past, disseminate our findings, grapple with the implications for our present, and work to secure an ever more inclusive future…The power of knowledge advances our common good; it enables us to be stronger and wiser, and it is essential to our moving forward together.”

World class education and racism seem to go hand in hand. Last year in an article about Princeton’s racist history, the New York Times reported that “In recent years, more than a dozen universities — including Brown, Harvard, Georgetown and the University of Virginia — have acknowledged their historical ties to slavery.”

Although UPenn is certainly not the only long-established university to be forced to confront its own moral integrity, this development does come shortly after an incident in May, where a law professor deemed black students inferior. Clearly, Penn’s racist tendencies are more deeply rooted than meets the eye.
