We’ve been following the story of Sigma Alpha Mu and it’s sister sorority Sigma Delta Tau since January when the two University of Michigan organizations destroyed Treetops Ski Resort in Gaylord, Mich. What was initially thought to have been $50,000 worth of damage quickly spiraled into $500,000. In addition, Sigma Alpha Mu has now been shut down and Sigma Delta Tau was given a two-year disciplinary suspension.
So what more, you ask, could possibly happen in this case?
Otsego County Prosecutor, Michael Rola, issued 30-day misdemeanor charges against sophomores Joshua Kaplan and Zachary Levin, both 19, alleging the pair allowed minors under their supervision to drink alcohol. A third student, who was not identified because he has not yet been arraigned, was charged with malicious destruction of property over $1000, according to USA Today.
It’s unclear as to why these three individuals in particular were charged when over 200 students were involved in the rampage. Only time will tell if others will be prosecuted as well.
Call me crazy, but my idea of a fun time isn’t drinking to the point where I feel the need to rip the ceiling down. Kids these days.
