Every time a college athlete gets a nickname these days, they rush to the patent office to get it trademarked. That is what former Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston is up to as he has filed to trademark “Famous Jameis”. The trademark was filed in early February but Winston obviously is looking to cash in on the name. [lead image via Joe Robbins / Getty Sport]
Winston only lost two games while at Florida State and told the Palm Beach Post in 2013 that he has been called Famous Jameis ever since he was playing Little League Baseball. That would mean that the nickname didn’t just show up when he was a Seminole. The question is why he didn’t go for the trademark earlier then as soon as things went well at Florida State.
It just is another one in the line of trademarks like Johnny Manziel and his “Johnny Football”. Things haven’t worked out well for Manziel at the NFL level. Hopefully for Winston, things are different for him and plenty of merchandise is made with the Famous Jameis saying on it. Who knows what kind of financial profits are ahead with this trademark if he gets it.
