You’ve all heard about the Mardi Gras parties that New Orleans is famous for so we decided to get a first hand look at one of the planet’s biggest party cities. Let me start by saying that there’s a very good reason we put New Orleans at #3 in our annual Trashiest Spring Break Destinations ranking.

New Orleans Mardi Gras

Panorama of Bourbon Street, New Orleans

One of the most noticeable things was the weather, normally around this time in ‘Nawlins the temperature is a comfortable 60°F but revelers were forced to endure a downright unacceptable 35°F. That being the case, there wasn’t as much skin on display as expected – in fact, most people decided to bundle up in jackets and even scarves/gloves.

This minor setback wasn’t enough to quell the masses and their almost frightening obsession with beads. Bud Light rented out a few balconies along Bourbon Street so we could participate in the “throws”. The unsuspecting party-goers went nuts when we broke out the Mixx Tail merchandise (hats, long-sleeved shirts, even a few napkins – yes napkins).

Pat O’Brien’s Bar is the birthplace of the Hurricane Cocktail which is why Bud Light chose Mardi Gras to roll out their new line of cocktails – current flavors are Long Island Iced Tea, Firewalker and of course, the Hurricane.

Walking around during Mardi Gras is a challenge in itself, not only have you been drinking all day (maybe even all week) but the beads are a bitch. We saw countless people take a tumble and, boy was it funny.

Everything on Bourbon Street, and I mean everything is shut down at midnight. A convoy of mounted police, hundreds of officers and several police cars were followed by a tanker spraying literally the entire street in white foam – the next morning everything was back to (almost) normal, except of course for the beads that were too high for workers.
