Update: The site that originally reported it isn’t trustworthy. So yeah, we were wrong.
Don’t look now but somehow the Summer Olympics just stole the best idea straight out from under the NBA’s noses–a 3-on-3 basketball tournament that will debut in the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics. It’s official. [lead image via Getty Sports/Tony Barson]
Mr. Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee, announced “We have spent many months weighing up this proposal, and our final call was to include the appropriated version of basketball into the 2016 Olympic program. This is a trial program and one that asks a lot more of both administrators, hosts, staff and players. However, keeping with the spirit of The Olympic Games, we have decided to include the 3-on-3, half-court variant.”
As Deadspin points out, “a large part of the impetus is to focus more on the amateurism of sports” so more than likely we won’t be seeing a Dream Team of Steph Curry, Lebron James and Kevin Durant (a no-brainer best 3-on-3 team) destroy the world.
