Dr. Evil interrupted the Saturday Night Live cold open last night–or maybe he was interrupting the SNL sketch about A Very Somber Christmas with Sam Smith. We’re not sure. We’re pretty sure, however, that Mike Myers called up Lorne Michaels and said, ‘Hey, how about I make an appearance on SNL as Dr. Evil and rant about how North Korea is giving evil a bad name by going after Sony and The Interview?” Lorne took one look at somebody’s lame pitch for a Sam Smith sketch and said, “Great–but please write it yourself.”
And so we get the return of Austin Powers’ nemesis, and you know that SNL had to go downhill from there. In the cold light of day, though, there aren’t exactly any great gags in Myer’s guest appearance. There are a few tired jokes, though. This is still a fun Christmas present from SNL–although they haven’t posted the video to their official Youtube channel yet. We’ll keep watching for that.
