Continue reading to find out why a 2-time Swimsuit Winner at Miss Oklahoma supports the organization's decision to eliminate the swimsuit phase of competition: The Swimsuit Competition was originally created to showcase each candidate's LIFESTYLE of health and fitness. However, the reality is that it actually caused the opposite and lead to unhealthy, unsustainable eating behaviors. When I first competed in Miss Oklahoma 4 years ago, I was so focused on what my body looked like in a swimsuit that I went to extreme lengths to try to achieve an ideal body type. I worked out 7 days a week for at least 2 hours. I tracked every calorie that I consumed. I stuck to a very strict meal plan. If I ate something I wasn't supposed to, I'd force myself to go to the gym and burn off the calories. On the outside I looked healthy because I had abs and muscles, but the truth is that I WAS MISERABLE. I repeat: I WAS MISERABLE. I was hungry all the time. I hated my workouts. I couldn't wait for the pageant to be over so that I could eat all of the things I was depriving myself of – ice cream, pizza, hamburgers, etc. I was counting down the days until my last workout, so I didn't have to step foot in the gym for several months. I didn't care about developing a sustainable, healthy lifestyle. All I cared about was looking good in a swimsuit on stage for one week during the competition. Sadly, the behaviors I mentioned are not uncommon among pageant girls. I didn't even mention the use of laxatives and diuretics for weight loss*! Girls take "water pills" (aka diuretics) during the week of the pageant, and every year someone gets dizzy or sick backstage due to dehydration caused by the diuretics. It has become normalized to take laxatives after a big meal to get rid of calories**. Tell me…… Does that sound healthy? or sustainable? or something you'd want modeled to young people? With the help of my sister who is a personal trainer, my dad who is a medical doctor, and my brother who is passionate about fitness, I was able to learn how to workout and eat healthy without resenting it / being miserable. Now, I workout 4 days a week for less than an hour. (finish reading in comments)
