Dion Waiters reportedly suffered a medical emergency during the Miami Heat’s recent trip from Phoenix to Los Angeles. According to Andy Slater of South Florida’s FOX Sports 640 radio, Waiters “overdosed” on gummies during the team’s flight and was unconscious when the plane landed.
After waking up, the shooting guard reportedly suffered a seizure.
Waiters was held out of the game against the Lakers due to an “illness,” the team claimed.
“A Miami Heat player had a medical emergency on their flight from Phoenix to Los Angeles on Thursday night, according to sources. A Heat spokesman told me the team cannot comment due to medical confidentiality laws,” Slater wrote on Twitter.
“Dion Waiters is the Heat player who had medical emergency on team plane, I’ve confirmed. Waiters overdosed on “gummies,” sources say, and was passed out when plane landed. He had a seizure when he was finally woken up, I’m told.”
It’s the latest setback for Waiters, who has had a rough start to the 2019-20 NBA season.
Waiters was suspended last month for “conduct detrimental to the team” after an alleged argument with Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra. Waiters was active for two of the games, but did not play. He has now missed the first nine games of the regular season.
“There were a number of unacceptable incidents this week, culminating with his unprofessional conduct on the bench last night,” Heat President Pat Riley told the Sun Sentinel after news surfaced that Waiters was suspended to start the new season. “As a consequence, I feel we had to suspend him.”
Waiters is currently in the third year of a four-year $52 million contract.
