Anime is quite a juggernaut. At first, it only was popular in its native Japan, before it ascended to new heights around the world. Entertaining countless children (and adults), there have been many hit series that have captured the attention of audiences everywhere. With many different genres, there are stories for practically everyone to enjoy. Although there are many anime series that I would like to include on this list, it only is calling for five, so I will oblige. Without further ado, here are the five best anime series of all time, ranked!

5. Dragon Ball Z

One of the most iconic anime series of all time, Dragon Ball Z adapts the second half of the manga it was based on. Centering around the adventures of Son Goku and his friends, secrets are revealed about the main cast and enemies abound, from fellow Saiyans, to galactic dictators, to artificially created creatures. Can Goku and company save the earth and collect the titular orbs, or will evil reign over?

As is the case with many landmark series, Dragon Ball Z can feel somewhat dated at times, with tropes that were once revolutionary that stemmed from here being executed in silly and hokey ways. Nevertheless, its charming cast of characters and well-choreographed fight scenes give it an everlasting charm that its more polished contemporaries lack. If you haven’t seen it, no time to hesitate, go on and search the stores for it!

4. Cowboy Bebop

Space bounty hunters, dogs and hackers, oh my! If you’re confused as to how such a ragtag group of characters could all appear on the same show, you’re not alone! Featuring bounty hunters Spike Siegal and Jet Black, along with femme fetale faye Valentine and expert hacker Radical Edward, this mismatched team travels the galaxy fighting crime and desperately trying to pay their rent. Can the odd assortment of anti-heroes save the day and snag the reward?

One of the more influential anime series, Cowboy Bebop will surprise a few who are expecting grand story arcs ala some of the choices later on this list. It’s more episodic in nature, but that doesn’t at all detract from its top-notch writing and relatable characters.

3. Neon Genesis Evangelion

World catastrophes always make for good series backstories and Neon Genesis Evangelion is no exception. Starring precocious Shinji, it features the exploits of a group of pilots who must counter the ironically named “Angels” from causing untold destruction, at least more than they already caused. Can this group of combatants rescue all of humanity?

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a gripping tale of the dangers of war and the psyches of those who partake in it. It’s consistently thought-provoking with much action as well.

2. Fullmetal Alchemist

If I told you that there was a series featuring the adventures of two brothers, one with a mechanical arm and the other trapped inside a suit of metal, you’d understandably be in disbelief. But alas, the adventures of Edward and Alphonse Elric are rightfully respected. After a tragic accident, the duo must embark on a quest to regain their bodies and avenge those who have wronged them. Questions are posed as to the morality of their actions and they have to assess their choices at several points. Can they get what they wish, or will the cost be too great?

Fullmetal Alchemist is a thought-provoking tale that questions the idea of good intentions leading people to do heinous things. At no point does it disappoint.

1. Death Note

The number one anime series of all time is criminally fantastic, which is quite a coincidence when the main protagonist amasses quite a criminal record over the course of the series. Starring teen prodigy Light Yagami, the series focuses on his usage of the titular booklet to eliminate all evildoers from society and create his own world free of crime. His task isn’t easy, as he faces opposition from a mysterious figure known as L, who intends to bring the nefarious “Kira” to justice. Will Light get his way, or will L save the day?

Death Note features a story that far surpasses any other anime. It poses questions as to the nature of morality and how far a society is willing to go to achieve a greater ideal or state. The story never ceases to terrify you or have your full attention. As such, it’s the best anime series of all time.
