Beloved actor-comedian John Witherspoon has passed away at age 77. On the morning of Wednesday, October 30, it was announced that the Friday star had passed in his home located in Sherman Oaks, California.
Witherspoon’s family issued a statement confirming his death.
“It is with deepest sorrow that we can confirm our beloved husband and father, John Witherspoon, one of the hardest working men in show business, died today at his home in Sherman Oaks at the age of 77,” Witherspoon’s family said in a statement, via Deadline. “He is survived by his wife Angela, and his sons JD, Alexander, and a large family. We are all in shock, please give us a minute for a moment in privacy and we will celebrate his life and his work together. John used to say ‘I’m no big deal’, but he was huge deal to us.”
Witherspoon’s son, JD, shared photos on social media along with a statement of his own.

Witherspoon was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1942 before he made the decision to jumpstart his stand-up comedy and acting career in the late 1970s.
Witherspoon is best known for playing the role of Ice Cube’s father in the 1995 film Friday, before also appearing in the sequels Next Friday and Friday After Next. He was also the voice of Gramps in the highly-popular animated series The Boondocks, which was set for a revival on HBO Max.
