Video games are a market that is no stranger to success. Millions upon millions of copies of many games are sold all around the world. But only so many games can achieve as much success to become the best selling.

This article will go over as of this year in 2019, what have been the top 10 highest sold games of all time. They must be at the very least home releases so arcade games can not qualify.

10. Wii Sports Resort

First initially released in 2009 on the Wii.

This game was a massive upgrade to the past success of Wii sports. This game included much more to do, such as sword fighting, basketball, piloting, and much more. It was also helped by one of the best add ons to the system. The Wii motion plus which allowed much stronger motion control use.

Sold about 33,100,000 copies.


9. Mario Kart Wii

First initially released in 2008 on the Wii.

This is currently not only the highest sold Mario kart game, but the highest sold racing games. With the new system of the Wii’s motion controls as well as the inclusion of many stages from past levels entries. Mario Kart Wii was a very welcome addition to the franchise.

Sold about 37,200,000 copies.


8. Wii Fit and Wii Fit Plus

First initially released in 2007 on the Wii.

Although we may see it now as an old gimmick, the hype and anticipation at the time for this add on was grand, to say the least. It was able to use motion sensors in a way we had never seen. It even managed to give us some exercise (For a while at least).

Sold about 43,800,000 copies.


7. Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow/ and Green

First initially released in 1996 on the Nintendo Gameboy (and since then on multiple other platforms).

Although the Final Fantasy saga may be the most well known JRPG series to come out, one of the most popular among all fans RPG fans is that of the Pokémon franchise, and it all started with the two primary colors (until yellow and green came as expansions). With its massive world development and grand roster of collectible characters, it’s no wonder why even with many other installations, this one still remains the most successful.

Sold about 47,520,000 copies.


6. Super Mario Bros.

First initially released in 1985 on the Nintendo Entertainment System (and since then on multiple other platforms).

Back before the mid-80s, the video game crash had put a massive dent in a still young growing industry. It wouldn’t be until much later when one of the most iconic platformers would come into to save the industry from lost potential. With its legacy, there’s no confusion why with it’s many ports to modern consoles it’s still as popular.

Sold about 48,240,000 copies.


5. PlayerUnknown’s Battleground

First initially released in 2017 on multiple platforms.

Being the most recent game to appear on this list, it certainly has a reputation to look up to. While Fortnite might have taken the spot away for the most famous battle royal, before that there was PUBG. A game that has even gone as far as to break Dota 2’s record for most players on steam and still going.

Sold about 50,000,000 copies.


4. Wii Sports

First initially released in 2006 on the Wii.

The last major Wii exclusive to appear on this list. Also considered the highest selling console exclusive. This was a game that many people first had as a demo for what the Wii was truly capable of, and it left no disappointment behind. Although a little more limiting and simple then what would go on to be Wii sports resort, it still amazes and entertains people with its overall fun mechanics.

Sold about 82,870,000 copies.


3. Grand Theft Auto V

First initially released in 2013 on multiple platforms.

One of the most popular open-world sandbox franchise is that of GTA. While many fans will hold unique places in their hearts for GTA 4, GTA Vice, and GTA San Andreas. It was GTA 5 that brought up Rockstar games as a force to be reconned with. It also helped that it brought in a brand new online mode with even more possibilities for gamers to explore.

Sold about 110,000,000 copies.


2. Tetris

First initially released in 1984 on multiple platforms.

This more the longest had held the record for the highest-selling game of all time. With its many platform ports on multiple handhelds and home console devices. Even though it may seem simple today, it was still quite revolutionary for its time. Being one of the most compelling strategic puzzle games on the market.

Sold about 170,000,000 copies.


1. Minecraft

First initially released in  2011 on PC (and since then on multiple other platforms).

It wasn’t until much recently that this game became the highest selling game of all time. Although it’s existence has been around for a whole 10 years (and counting) it wasn’t until the most recent time that Minecraft really started to grow in popularity more than it ever did before, although it may not be so easy to explain why.

Sold about 176,000,000 copies.
