When world leaders come to the United States for the G7 Summit in 2020, it will all go down at one of Donald Trump’s golf resorts next June. According to the White House, the G7 will be hosted at Trump’s Doral resort. White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, however, denies Trump will profit from the summit.
Mulvaney claims the resort was chosen because it is one of the only places that could handle the activity and volume that the summit requires.
“And it became apparent at the end of that process that Doral was by far and away, far and away, the best physical facility for this meeting,” Mulvaney said, via BBC. “In fact I was talking to one of the advance teams when they came back and I said, ‘What was it like?’ And they said, ‘You’re not going to believe this but it’s almost like they built this facility to host this type of event.'”
Trump had previously boasted about his resort’s ability to host the G7.
“It’s got tremendous acreage, many hundreds of acres, so we can handle whatever happens,” Trump previously said about his resort, via the New York Times. “People are really liking it and plus it has buildings that have 50 to 70 units. And so each delegation can have its own building.”
The G7 — or Group of Seven — is a meeting between leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, United Kingdom, the United States, and the EU. It is scheduled to be held between 10 and 12 June next year.
Leading up to the event, there will be plenty of discussion about whether hosting the G7 at a resort owned by the president is a conflict of interest.
