If you were a fan of the animated television series The Boondocks, we have some good news for you. It was previously reported that the Boondocks reboot was coming and now Deadline is reporting some new details.
According to the report, Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder and Sony Pictures Animations were given a two-season, 24-episode order by HBO for the streaming service HBO Max.
“The Boondocks was a revolutionary series that sparked conversations on hot button issues and brought dark subjects into the light with episodes like The Trial of Robert Kelly, The Fundraiser and The Story of Gangstalicious,” said Kevin Reilly, Chief Content Officer, HBO Max and President, TBS, TNT and truTV. :Aaron is a gifted visionary whose unique style of storytelling is a welcome voice and we are elated The Freemans are making their thugnificent comeback on HBO Max.
“There’s a unique opportunity to revisit the world of The Boondocks and do it over again for today. It’s crazy how different the times we live in are now – both politically and culturally – more than a decade past the original series and two decades past the original newspaper comic. There’s a lot to say and it should be fun.”
The Boondocks‘ new episodes will follow the stories of Huey, Riley, and Robert “Granddad” Freeman.
The Boondocks initially premiered in November 2005 and ended its run in June 2014 after 55 episodes and four seasons. The series was a part of Comedy Central’s late-night programming block dubbed Adult Swim. HBO Max will debut The Boondocks relaunch in the fall of 2020 with a 50-minute special. The WarnerMedia streaming service will also have the past 55 episodes available on demand.
