Week 2 of the NFL regular season was a wild one with some teams continuing to show they are legitimate championship contenders, while others continued to find any form of rhythm and once again added to the loss column. Then, there were some teams that were struck by devastating injury news.
On Monday, September 16, it was announced that New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees would miss up to six weeks after suffering a torn ligament in his thumb that will require surgery.
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, meanwhile, will miss the remainder of the year after undergoing surgery on his elbow.
As a result of the injuries, the folks in Las Vegas have shifted their betting lines for Super Bowl favorites.
“With the news of Drew Brees being out for at least six weeks, the Saints have gone from 8/1 to 20/1 to win the Super Bowl but still remain favorites to win the NFC South at 4/5. The NFC South is definitely down thus far this season,” BetOnline.ag SportsBook Brand Manager Dave Mason said.
“The Steelers, however, may have bigger problems with the way they lost their first two games and now Ben Roethlisberger is out for the season. They have went from 28/1 to 80/1 to win the Super Bowl, which are the longest odds they have had this early in the season during the Roethlisberger era.”
