Carter released his debut album, Die Lit, in May 2018. The album debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200. Die Lit also received significant critical recognition for Carter’s innovative rapping techniques and executive producer Pi’erre Bourne’s buoyant production.
He has also contributed to some of 2019’s biggest musical projects to date. He secured a feature on Solange’s fourth studio album, When I Get Home, offering the oft-celebrated verse on “Almeda.” He also added a particularly memorable 20 seconds to Tyler, the Creator’s chart-topping album Igor, on the song “Earfquake.”
His long-awaited second album, Whole Lotta Red, has created a frenzy among fans due to the number of songs that have leaked from the project. It is expected that the album will be released in September 2019.
Musical innovation
One of the most celebrated parts of Carter’s rapping is the innovative style he has developed. While many critics may be dismissive of his lack of lyrical substance, his vocal articulation pushes rap to new territory.
He started his career with a more straight-forward style of rap that also incorporated a new level of ad-libbing. The lack of focus on lyrics and the unintelligibility of his rapping has led some to classify his style under “mumble rap.” His raps were often repetitive, angering some of hip-hop’s more traditional followers, but delighting audiences open to a new form.
As Carter continues further into his career, he develops new musical techniques. He complicates the beat’s rhythm by dipping into the offbeat or just skating on top, accentuating certain parts of the rhythm. Influenced by the likes of Young Thug, his rapping has also become much more melodic and abstract — more about the sound than the lyrical content.
He has also created a new vocal style that has been dubbed his “Baby Voice.” This new style incorporates the melodic tendencies of his later material and has been featured on many of his most recent collaborations and releases. It has been championed by both his followers and critics as an exciting new form of rap.
