Revis Island is one of the few islands you would never even consider taking a vacation to. Most people love taking vacations, especially if it’s to a tropical island. But for NFL wide receivers, Revis Island was a prison you couldn’t escape for the 60 minutes you were on the football field every Sunday. Now 34 years old, All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis retired from the NFL in July 2018.

Early Career Success
After 3 successful seasons at the University of Pittsburgh, Darrelle Revis declared for the 2007 NFL Draft. The New York Jets found themselves infatuated with the young corner, and traded the 25th pick, along with their second and fifth round picks, in order to move up to 14 to get their guy.
Things were not so peachy from the start for Revis and the Jets, however, as he missed 21 days of training camp before finally signing his rookie contract, which may have been a sign of things to come. But once the contract dispute was over and the pads went on, Revis quickly established himself as one of the best young corners in the league, starting all 16 games and allowing just 3 touchdowns. In year two Revis was even better, intercepting a pass in the end zone with 10 seconds left to clinch a 6 point victory in their season opener. The next week he held Hall of Fame receiver Randy Moss to just 2 catches for 22 yards, and in week 4 intercepted 2 passes (one returned for a touchdown) while covering another future Hall of Famer Larry Fitzgerald. Revis was selected to the 2009 Pro Bowl and recorded a highlight-worthy interception in the game.

Revis had to face 7 of the top 15 ranked wide receivers in Andre Johnson, Randy Moss (twice), Terrell Owens (twice), Steve Smith, Roddy White, Reggie Wayne and Chad Ochocinco. In those 9 games against those stars, Revis held them to a combined 25 receptions for 191 yards and 1 touchdown. That’s just 2.78 catches for 21.2 yards a game for receivers who combined to average 5.1 catches for 73.7 yards per game. Revis allowed just 3 touchdowns all year against his 6 interceptions, and only 2 wide receivers managed to top the 50 yard mark (none of which were listed above). He somehow took his game to another level when the playoffs came around, as he limited Chad Ochocinco to just 2 receptions for 28 yards while also intercepting a pass. A week later Revis once again outdid himself against Philip Rivers and the Chargers, as he was targeted just 3 times. Those 3 passes resulted in 2 deflections and 1 interception as the Jets advanced to the AFC Championship Game. While the Jets fell short of reaching the Super Bowl, Revis once again put Reggie Wayne on an island, as he only caught 2 passes. The season earned Revis the nickname Revis Island, as the receivers he was tasked with guarding were said to have been stranded on an island as he locked them down over the course of the game. Despite having one of the greatest seasons ever by a defensive back, Revis was controversially beat out by Charles Woodson in Defensive Player of the Year voting.
Contract Disputes and Injuries
After his impressive 2009 season, Revis decided to hold out in hopes of being rewarded with a contract extension. After missing all of training camp and the preseason, Revis signed his extension and reported to the team a week before the season opener. In week 2 Revis suffered strained hamstring and missed 3 games, although he was still able to dominate upon his return. In 3 games in November against Calvin Johnson, Andre Johnson and Chad Ochocino, Revis allowed just 3 catches for 31 yards. The next season Revis tied the Jets record with a 100 yard interception returned for a touchdown as part of a 2 INT game. After making his 4th Pro Bowl that season, number 24 hinted that he might hold out again in hopes of a raise, although that never came to fruition. But in Week 1 Revis suffered a concussion, forcing him to miss a game. In his return in Week 3 he was once again injured, this time tearing his ACL and missing the rest of the season.
Pro Bowler on the Move
After the 2012 season the Jets traded Revis to the Tampa Buccaneers, fearful that Revis would’ve once again held out for a new contract. Instead, the Bucs made him the highest-paid defensive back in NFL history, paying him $96 million over 6 years. Despite a Pro Bowl season from Revis, Tampa Bay decided to move on from him as they moved to a new scheme that he did not fit in. With no guarantees in his contract, the Buccaneers released the star corner. After just hours as a free agent, Revis signed a 1 year deal for $12 million with the New England Patriots. Revis once again made the Pro Bowl and allowed just reception total in the AFC Championship Game and Super Bowl, which the Patriots won. That offseason Revis decided to go back to the team that drafted him, signing a 5 year, $70 million deal with the Jets. While he was a Pro Bowler in the 2015 season, his second season back was the worst of his career as he was clearly declining at age 32. He was released after the 2016 season and wasn’t signed until late in the 2017 season. He agreed to a 2 year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs on November 22, 2017, but played just 6 games before the Chiefs released him, leading to his retirement.
Lasting Legacy
While Darrelle Revis is done on the field, there is still one football milestone he can reach: Canton, Ohio. Revis made 7 Pro Bowls and was named First-Team All-Pro 4 times in just 11 seasons(only 9 full seasons). He finished his career with 29 interceptions and 139 pass deflections in 145 games, but the stats don’t tell the full story with number 24. In an era where the NFL moved more and more towards passing and it became harder to defend receivers due to rule changes, Revis consistently forced quarterbacks to not even target their best wideout for 4 quarters. While his career was shorter than some of the other great defensive backs in the Hall of Fame, Revis should join them in Canton in 2023.
