Could we be one step closer to seeing a woman in the National Football League? Carli Lloyd has been generating buzz since her viral 55-yard field goal during a joint practice between the Philadelphia Eagles and Baltimore Ravens.
The United States women’s national team star booted the kick through the uprights which immediately sparked conversation about whether she should get a shot in the NFL.
Well, as it turns out, there has been interest and there was even an offer for Lloyd to play in a preseason finale.
Unfortunately, prior obligations to the women’s national team — an international friendly against Portugal — will prevent her from suiting up and taking the field for a historic moment.
“Today, she got another call from another NFL team,” Galanis said, via Martin Rogers of FOX Sports. “The one that called today, I don’t want to say who it is, was willing to put her on the roster for their next (game). They were willing to put her on the roster.
“She was told (she could) play on Thursday, the NFL game, but she is playing Thursday with the national team, so that was the conflict.”
Lloyd had recently revealed that she was receiving from NFL teams and said that there had been multiple inquiries.
“There’s been some interesting chatter about it. I think anything is possible. It’s been really interesting because for me, I’m just an athlete. I’m a competitor. But for so many other people, I think they’re starting to think, will there ever be a female in the NFL at some point? And I think we’re kind of at that crossroads as far as equality and, you know, just women empowerment, so you’re kind of being in the crosshairs of that,” Lloyd told Sports Illustrated’s Planet Futbol.
“And I’ve definitely got some inquiries, I’ve definitely got some people talking. Anything’s possible, but right now, I’m strictly a soccer player, and we’ll see what the future holds.”
It would certainly be interesting to see a professional soccer player in the NFL and an athlete like Lloyd would open so many more doors for the future, so wait and see what the future holds is exactly what we will do.
