New England Patriots safety Patrick Chung is facing jail time after being indicted for cocaine possession, according to a report from TMZ Sports. The cocaine charges stem from an incident in New Hampshire earlier this summer.
The charge is a Class B felony which carries up to 7 years in prison if convicted.
“We are aware of the reports regarding Patrick Chung,” the Patriots said in a statement. “We will not be commenting while his judicial proceedings take place.”
The NFL has yet to comment on the situation.
Chung’s arraignment is scheduled for August 28. If Chung is found guilty, he could face a suspension from the league for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. Cowboys tight end Rico Gathers was recently suspended one game by the league for a previous marijuana arrest.
The 32-year-old defensive back was a second-round pick of the New England Patriots in 2009 after previously starring at Oregon. As a member of the Patriots, Chung has been a part of three Super Bowl-winning times. At Oregon, Chung, who is the all-time Ducks record holder for defensive starts for 51, was a second-team All-American and two-time first-team All-Pac 10 member.
Chung is currently the starting safety in New England, but has been wearing a red non-contact jersey during practice while he continues to recover from offseason shoulder surgery. Chung’s season ended last year after suffering a broken arm in the third quarter of Super Bowl LIII.
