Lana Del Rey has responded to last weekend’s back-to-back mass shootings by using the tragedy as in inspiration to write a new song. Del Rey took to social media following the shootings and shared a snippet of her latest track titled “Looking for America.”

Del Rey said that the song came to her mind early in the morning, so she gathered people together to make it happen.

“[I] came back early from Montecito with my brother this morning and asked Jack Antonoff to come into town because I had a song on my mind that I wanted to write,” Lana wrote in an Instagram caption.

“Now I know I’m not a politician and I’m not trying to be so excuse me for having an opinion, but in light of all of the mass shootings and the back to back shootings in the last couple of days which really affected me on a cellular level, I just wanted to post this video that our engineer Laura took 20 minutes ago. I hope you like it.”

On Saturday, August 3, 20 people were killed and 26 others were injured after the gunman open-fired inside of a Walmart in El Paso, Texas. Hours later, in the early hours of Sunday, August 4, 9 people were shot and killed and more than two dozen others were injured at a local bar in Dayton, Ohio.

As for Del Rey, the track comes just a few weeks before she is set to release Norman F*cking Rockwell on Friday, August 30. It will be her first full-length album since Lust for Life in 2017.
