Top welterweight contenders Colby Covington and Robbie Lawler squared off in the main event of UFC on ESPN 5 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey on Saturday, August 3. Covington, the former interim welterweight champion, and Lawler, a former 170-pound titleholder, were battling it out to solidify their status as the next contender for the welterweight belt.
As promised, Covington had some special guests in the building.
Covington immediately came out as the aggressor and was pushing the pace with relentless takedown attempts. The pace from Covington was overwhelming his former American Top Team teammate as he dominated through the first half of the fight.
In the championship rounds, Covington continued to be the more aggressive fighter with a nonstop offensive attack and Lawler did not appear to have an answer. Lawler swung for the fences late in the final round, but it was too little, too late for the former champion.
