UPDATE: The suspect in the El Paso Walmart shooting is allegedly Patrick Crusius, a 21-year-old from Dallas, Texas. Latest reports have the death toll at 20 victims, with four being children.
A shooting at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas has left at least 18 people injured, according to multiple media reports. The incident took place next to the Cielo Vista Mall, though there are currently no reports on the severity of the injuries. Dallas’ branch of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms is responding to the scene.
Multiple fatalities have been reported and authorities say that “suspects” are in custody.
Earlier in the week, a shooting took place at a Walmart in Southaven, Mississippi that left two people dead.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott confirmed the ongoing situation in a statement.
“In El Paso, the Texas Dept. of Public Safety is assisting local law enforcement and federal authorities to bring this tragedy to the swiftest and safest possible conclusion,” he wrote on Twitter. “We thank all First Responders for their courageous response & urge all area residents to remain safe.”
According to witnesses, there may have been multiple shooters opening fire.
Police are urging people to avoid the area.
“Scene is still Active. We have multi reports of multiple shooters,” the El Paso Police Department wrote in a statement on social media. “Please avoid area police conducting search of a very large area. Media staging will be given when area is secure.”
Two people were shot an killed in the attack at a Walmart in Mississippi on Tuesday, July 30 which was carried out by a disgruntled former employee. The shooter was taken into custody. After initially carrying out the attack, the gunman exchanged fire with police officers in the parking lot of the store.
