Brandon Gales has been identified as one of the victims who was fatally shot at a Walmart in Southaven, Mississippi on Tuesday, July 30. According to Shay Arthur of WREG Channel 3, Gales’ father confirmed his son’s death.
Two people were shot an killed in the attack which was carried out by a disgruntled former employee.
The shooter has since been taken into custody. After initially carrying out the attack, the gunman exchanged fire with police officers in the parking lot of the store. At this time, authorities have yet to identify the gunman.
The 38-year-old Gales, who worked at Walmart for 15 or 16 years, leaves behind three children. He was described as a “nice guy” who was well-known within his community.
The deadly shooting began at about 6:32 a.m., according to NBC News.
Along with the two victims who were fatally shot, a police officer responding to the scene was also injured.
“These people were doing the same thing that you and I do every day, showing up for work in an attempt to provide for their families, then became the victims of a senseless violent act,” Southaven police Chief Macon Moore said while speaking to reporters.
“One of our officers was shot at this time. He was saved by his vest. At this point, the suspect was engaged by another officer. He was struck twice by gunfire from our officer. He was taken into custody.”
