Stephen Romero has been identified as one of the victims in the deadly shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Northern California on Sunday, July 28. Romero, who is from San Diego, is the youngest of the victims at just six years old.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who (lost) their lives, and those recovering in the hospital. I am deeply saddened by the news of Stephen Romero. I pray that God will grant his family strength,” said Gilroy City Councilmember Fred Tovar in a statement, via CNN.com.
“My most sincere condolences. I will keep your family close in my thoughts and prayers in the coming weeks as you are going through your process of grieving,” Tovar said in a statement on Sunday night.
The city of Gilroy says that at least three people have died and 11 others are injured.
According to Stephen’s grandmother, Maribel Romero, Stephen was declared dead by the time he had reached the hospital. Maribel’s daughter-in-law and Stephen’s other grandmother were also shot and injured in the attack.
“I just hope there is justice and they catch the last person or the other person and that there’s justice. I want justice for my grandson,” Romero told CNN affiliate KGO-TV.
Police shot and killed one of the suspected shooters, while an investigation is ongoing as to whether there was a second shooter or accomplice.
“Witnesses indicated there may have been a second suspect and a search is underway for that person,” a statement said.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of all of the victims in this horrific and tragic incident.
