Nancy Goodman is the latest woman to join the ranks of “when being racist in the social media age goes terribly wrong.” Nancy, a 71-year-old from North Carolina, was at the upscale Bonefish Grill restaurant in North Carolina when she began berating a group of African-American patrons.
During the verbal altercation, Nancy decided to take a dark turn and called the woman she was arguing with a “stupid n****r.”
Of course, it was all caught on camera.
“What was supposed to be dinner with my girlfriends ended up in us being called stupid n*ggers,” Chanda Stewart said of the incident in a Facebook post. “The climate of the country today has some people thinking whatever they feel they can say. The reality is if we were to retaliate with this same kind of hate and ignorance we would be called ‘angry black women’. As I prepare my child for the real world these are some of the people I prepare her for. The hateful, prejudiced, racists who think we should all ‘go back to where we came from.'”
The restaurant says they are investigating the incident.
To make matters worse for Nancy, she recently spoke to the local news and defended her use of the word before saying she would say it again. Nancy told WRAL in Raleigh that she felt “forced” into using the racial slur because the woman was being too loud.
Oof.
This is just the latest case of racism caught on camera this year. In the past few months we have seen a San Jose gas station clerk berate a customer for speaking in Spanish, a customer in a Mexican restaurant complaining that the manager used Spanish, a New York meteorologist fired for using a racial slur on air, and college students everywhere using their social media accounts to share their racist thoughts.
It’s 2019, people. Be better.
