Boxing Legend Pernell Whitaker Dies at Age 55 After Being Struck by Car

Boxing legend Pernell Whitaker has passed away at age 55, according to a report from TMZ Sports. Pernell was killed late Sunday, July 14 after being struck by a vehicle in Virginia Beach. After being transported to the local hospital, Whitaker succumbed to his injuries.

It is not believed that Whitaker was out partying when he was hit.

Whitaker was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2006 after an impressive career that included fights against Oscar De La Hoya and Julio Cesar Chavez. He earned world championships in the lightweight, light welterweight, welterweight, and light middleweight divisions.

“Sweat Pea” also won gold medals at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California and the 1983 Pan American Games in Caracas, Venezuela while competing as a lightweight.

Whitaker holds a professional record of 40-4-1, with one no contest.
