Florijana Ismaili, a 24-year-old soccer player from Switzerland, has been reported missing after a swimming accident on Saturday, June 29. Ismaili was on a boat on Lake Como in Italy when she reportedly dove into the lake but did not resurface, according to a report from The Guardian.
Ismaili had been enjoying a day on the lake with a teammate at the time of her disappearance.
The 24-year-old forward is a captain for BSC Young Boys Frauen. She also has 33 caps for the Switzerland women’s national team and was on the roster for the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
“BSC Young Boys have been informed that our player Florijana Ismaili has been missing since Saturday afternoon on Lake Como after a swimming accident,” said the club in a statement. “Searches by the police continue. We are very concerned and have not given up the hope that everything will turn out well.
“We are in close contact with family members and we ask for your understanding that we can not provide any further information at the present time. We will inform again as soon as we know more.”
Searches for Ismaili will continue on Sunday morning.
“We do not know yet what exactly happened,” a police spokesperson told Swiss newspaper Blick. ”It could be that the young woman fainted when she jumped into the cold water.”
Ismaili was born on January 1, 1995, and began her youth career with FC Walperswil. She is of Albanian descent.
