UPDATE: Police have confirmed that Ayoola Ajayi has been arrested for the murder of University of Utah student Mackenzie Lueck. He allegedly burned and buried her body on his property, after previously contacting a contractor about building a soundproof, secret room in his home.

Original Story: Ayoola “AJ” Ajayi has been identified as a “person of interest” as authorities continue their search for missing University of Utah student Mackenzie Lueck. Police searched the home of Ajayi, a 31-year-old Army veteran, on Thursday, June 27 as they continue to look for the 23-year-old sorority member who disappeared on June 17 after taking a Lyft from the Salt Lake City airport.

Ajayi is a former Army IT specialist who owns a home five miles from the park where Mackenzie was dropped off. Police searched his home for 19 hours and dug up portions of his yard while also bringing in police dogs.

From the Daily Mail:

While police declined to name the homeowner, DailyMail.com learned it is owned by Ayoola ‘AJ’ Ajayi, 31, who lists a private room inside the home on Airbnb for up to $40 a night. Officials announced they are now searching for a mattress and box spring that Ajayi had given away for free on resale website LetGo five days ago.

Ajayi, who is currently not in custody, currently works at Dell as a Senior Technical Support Analyst following his two-year stint as an IT specialist in the United States Army.

Police have yet to indicate that they suspect any foul play.

MacKenzie’s family says she is 5-foot-6, 120 pounds.

“Our primary goal is to find Mackenzie and bring her home. Her family is grateful for the concern, prayers and the tireless efforts of the Salt Lake City Police and members of the community,” her family said in a statement.

“MacKenzie, if you can hear us, your family and friends are looking for you and are concerned for your safety. Please reach out to anyone so we can get you home.”

If anyone has any information on Mackenzie or where she may be, please contact SLCPD at (801)799-3000 re: case 19-111129.
