The Golden State Warriors knocked off the Toronto Raptors in Game 5 of the NBA Finals on Monday, June 10, to send the series back to the Bay Area. However, the team suffered a devastating loss when Kevin Durant reaggravated his Achilles injury.
When Durant went down, there was an unfortunate moment when Raptors fans decided to cheer the injury as KD was helped off the court.
Following the game, a number of members of the Warriors roster addressed the cheers from the crowd and shared their disgust for the way people in attendance had reacted to the injury of a player.
“That’s just unreal,” Draymond Green said at the post-game press conference. “Classless. Just classless.”
“I commend Danny Green and Kyle Lowry especially, I think they were the ones that were kinda singling to the crowd like, ‘Let’s check ourselves a little bit and understand this is about an individual, a human being,’ and not, ‘Oh shoot, he’s hurt. We won the championship,'” Steph Curry added. “You hate to see that when a guy is going through pain like that.”
Klay Thompson also shared his thoughts:
Kevin Durant also issued an emotional statement about his injury.
“Dub nation gonna be loud as f— for Game 6,” Durant wrote on his Instagram story. “I’m hurting deep in the soul right now I can’t lie but seeing my brothers gets this win was like taking a shot of tequila, i got new life lol. #dubs”
Despite their win Monday night, Toronto continues to hold a 3-2 lead in the series. Game 6 will take place on Thursday, June 13 at 9:00 p.m. ET at Oracle Arena. If the Warriors are able to pull out another win, Toronto will host Golden State in Game 7 on Sunday, June 16. Let’s hope that fans on both sides can keep things classy the next time the two teams meet on the court.
