A helicopter crashed into a building in midtown Manhattan on Monday, June 10, according to multiple reports. The New York City Fire Department confirmed the news after reports began surfacing on social media.
According to NBC, the helicopter crash sparked a fire atop the building and at least one person — believed to be the pilot — died in the crash.
There has been no indication of criminal activity being involved in the crash.
“The only indication was a helicopter had to do an emergency or a hard landing, or crashed onto the rooftop of the building, causing a fire,” New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said. “But there’s no indication of anything more than that.”
Videos and images from the crash were circulating that showed smoke coming out of the top of a 54-story office building.

A call about the incident at the AXA Equitable Center on Seventh Avenue and West 49th Street came in shortly before 2 p.m. The NYPD confirmed the hard landing on the roof of 787 Seventh Avenue; it wasn’t clear why the chopper would have tried to land there, nor was it clear who owned the chopper. The fire sent thick gray smoke billowing out from the top of the towering building; the blaze was out within about 30 minutes.
The city issued an emergency notification saying to expect road closures and the presence of emergency personnel at Seventh Avenue and West 51st Street.
The White House briefed president Donald Trump on the incident and say that they continue to monitor the situation. The Federal Aviation Administration is “gathering information,” while the National Transportation Safety Board also acknowledged the incident.
