Former UFC champions Demetrious Johnson and Eddie Alvarez are set to return to ONE Championship for their sophomore appearances later this summer. On Monday, June 10, it was announced that Mighty Mouse and Alvarez will be returning to the cage at ONE Championship 99.
“ONE Championship 99: Dawn of Heroes” will take place on August 2 at Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines.
Alvarez will be facing off against former ONE champion Eduard Folayang, while Johnson will be taking on Tatsumitsu Wada in the flyweight grand prix semifinal.
Other bouts at ONE Championship 99 include Kairat Akhmetov vs. Danny Kingad in the second flyweight grand prix semifinal, and Honorio Banario vs. Timofey Nastyukhin in a lightweight grand prix semifinal. Leandro Issa vs. Daichi Takenaka, Ayaka Miura vs. Samara Santos, and Reece McLaren vs. Yaya Wakamatsu are also scheduled for the event.
In his first ONE Championship bout, Johnson, the former flyweight champion, was able to submit Yuya Wakamatsu in the opening round of the flyweight tournament. He had signed with the promotional after losing his title to current UFC two-division champion Henry Cejudo.
Alvarez, meanwhile, suffered a shocking first-round TKO loss to Timofey Nastyukhin in the opening round of the lightweight tournament.
