Henrik Lundquist is Swedish Hockey Player who Currently plays hockey for the New York Rangers. Lundquist is a 6’1″ 13-year NHL veteran, who was drafted in the 7th round in the 2000 NBA Draft by the New York Rangers. Besides playing for the New York Rangers for the past 13 years, Lundquist has played overseas in Sweden for Frolunda.

Early Hockey Career

In 2000 Lundquist made is Swedish hockey league debut for Frolunda in the season opener in a 2-4 defeat against Brynas IF on 21st September 2000. He played 5 seasons for Frolunda. During his 5 years of playing hockey in Sweden, Lundquist developed into the league’s finest goaltender. He was able to win the Honken Trophy three consecutive seasons in 2003, 2004, and 2005 for being the best Swedish goaltender in the league. In 2005, he also won two of the most prestigious awards in Swedish ice hockey, the Guldhjälmen which goes to the most valuable player voted on by the players and the Guldpucken the best goaltender. During the 2005 season, Lundqvist skill showed throughout his 5 years of playing hockey for Frolunda. Lundquist broke four Swedish national records as a goalie. These national records were the lowest goals against average (1.05), highest save percentage (.962), longest goalless streak (at 172 minutes and 29 seconds) and most shutouts in a season which was 6. He was also named Best Goaltender, Best Player and was selected as the league’s MVP by fellow players. In 180 appearances with Frölunda, he was able to achieve an1.96 goals-against average (GAA) and a .927 save percentage, leading his team to four consecutive playoff appearances and winning two titles in 2003 and 2005.


New York Rangers Rookie season

Lundqvist made his NHL debut on 8 October 2005 against the New Jersey Devils. He stopped 24 of 27 shots in a 3–2 overtime loss. During the season, Lundqvist became the first Rangers rookie to post 20 wins in a season since Mike Richter did it recording 21 in 1990–91. By finishing the season with 30 wins, Lundqvist broke the Rangers rookie goaltending record of 29 wins, which was previously held by Jim Henry. During his rooking season, Lundqvist was among the NHL leaders for goalies in several of the Categories. He was fifth in GAA (2.24), fourth in save percentage (.922), 11th in wins (30) and tied for 16th in shutouts with two.

In the Henrik Lundqvist prime, he was very special as a player and continued to prove doubters wrong. In 2009 Lundquist became the first goalie to record 30 wins in first four seasons. Lundqvist was able to win the Vezina Trophy in 2012 for the first time after being previously nominated in 2006, 2007, and 2008, and again in 2013. Lundquist has also appeared in 3 Allstar games in 2009,2011 and 2012. In a game on 2013, Lundqvist took the NHL all-time lead in shootout wins over Martin Brodeur.  On 3 April 2013, Lundqvist won his 268th game, surpassing Eddie Giacomin for the second most wins in Rangers history, behind only Mike Richter. Lundqvist was also able to lead the New York Rangers on a miraculous Stanley Cup run in 2014 and 2015 were they eventually lost to the Los Angles Kings

Henrick Lundquist pulls his weight on the ice but he also does his part of the ice in the community. In 2009, Lundqvist became the Rangers spokesperson for the Garden of Dreams Foundation. This foundation works with mostly Madison Square Gardens and its tenants to host charitable events and they grant wishes to sick children. His role is to host even and record public service messages. In 2014 he and wife created the Henrik Lundquist foundation which is a non-profit organization that has a focus on health and education for children and families.


What Now:

Lundquist still has one year left on his 7 year deal with the Rangers. Lundquist is now 37 and this season could be one of his last with the Rangers. He has said that he wants to be a Ranger for life but the Rangers have to decided what they want to do with him The Rangers are in a Rebuild and collecting young talent in the draft and through free agency. The only chance for Lundquist to win a cup is if he requests a trade or waits out the rebuild. It will be interesting to see if he wins a cup with the Rangers but at the end of his career, he will be a sure-fire Hall of Famer.
