Gabrielle Union, born October 29, 1972, in Omaha, Nebraska, is an outspoken actress, activist and author who has acted in a number of sitcoms, movies, and reality television shows. In 2014, Union got married to then-NBA star Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat.
Union is the stepmother of Wade’s three children and the couple welcomed their daughter Kaavia James Union Wade in November 2018. Kaavia was born via surrogate because Gabrielle had previously struggled with miscarriages.
“When our surrogate’s water broke, we already had a plan in place,” Union said during an interview with Oprah. “It was a really long labor, so by the time the doctor decided to do a C-section, the cord was tied around her ankle. We had our own room from the time she was born. We all—our surrogate, our surrogate’s husband, me, and my husband—we all had a chance to bond together. It took all of us to create her.”
The couple spent their honeymoon in the Maldives and Tanzania.
Prior to her relationship with Wade, Union was married to former NFL player Chris Howard for four years. She said in an interview with Aalbc.com that the couple separated after she “sort of realized that [s]he hadn’t been making sound choices which were the best for her to pursue her hopes and dreams and aspirations and passions.”
Union made her silver screen debut in 1999 in the film She’s All That and has also starred in popular movies like 10 Things I Hate About You, Love & Basketball, Bring It On, Bad Boys II, and more. Her first acting gig game with small roles on Family Matters, Saved by the Bell: The New Class, and Moesha in the early 1990s.
