While reports swirl that the Big Baller Brand could soon be folding, BBB patriarch LaVar Ball announced has been relatively quiet. However, he recently sat down for an interview where he made his latest bold claim.
Ball has never been shy about exaggerating, he decided to say that his sons — Lonzo, LiAngelo, and LaMelo — will be billionaires before their playing careers come to an end. Yes, billion with a B.
“My boys are gonna be the first ones to be billionaires playing on the court. I got other stuff in line to get that,” Ball said in a cover story for SLAM Magazine. “Whatever my boys are playing for on the court, that’ll be chump change. You don’t have guys doing that. One guy gets a championship and next thing you know he wants his own team, bigger contracts.”
Lonzo, the former No. 2 overall pick, is currently the only one of LaVar’s sons who is in the NBA.
LiAngelo is currently without a team after stints in the JBA and overseas in Lithuania, while LaMelo returned to high school after playing alongside Gelo overseas. LaMelo still has one year before he is eligible for the NBA, but questions are swirling about his future. Because of his former status as a pro, there is a strong belief that he will not be eligible to play NCAA basketball. Instead, he could be returning overseas to play one season professionally in either Australia or China before declaring for the NBA Draft.
If any of the sons are going to end up becoming billionaires, they still have a long way to go — especially after Big Baller Brand co-founder Alan Foster was allegedly stealing millions of dollars from the oldest Ball son before the family decided to go their separate ways. But hey, it is good to dream big.
